Suspected serial rapist set ablaze in Delta

An angry mob on Wednesday set ablaze a suspected member of a gang of serial rapists that had terrorised Ughelli and its neighbouring communities in Delta State.

No fewer than four ladies, including the wife of a popular hotelier in the metropolis, had been raped by the gang of rapists in the last two weeks.

One of the victims lost her life in the process.

The group, according to residents, specialises in raping and attacking salesgirls and middle-aged women.

Luck, however, ran out on the suspected member of the group on Wednesday when he allegedly attempted to rape a salesgirl (name withheld) at the Adagharagba Junction near the Ughelli Central Market.

He was said to have been apprehended by the residents.

It was gathered that the suspect was apprehended by a mob at about 11.30am when he attempted to rape the salesgirl.

A resident, who witnessed the incident, told our correspondent that there had been a lot of killings and rape by a group of young men who targeted salesgirls and female traders within Ughelli and its environs.

The source noted that the suspected rapist had confessed that he was a member of a three-member gang that raped salesgirls and female traders in the community.

The suspect, who hailed from Oroahakpor community in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of the state, reportedly said other members of the gang fled on sighting the mob.

Another eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The hoodlums pretended to be customers buying things in bulk and that was why they were allowed to enter the store. The next thing we heard was the screaming of the salesgirl and we immediately rushed in only to see that that she had been attacked; she was bleeding.

“The mob pursued the suspects, who had fled the scene. They caught up with one of them at the Omotor Junction, where he was set ablaze before the arrival of security agents.”

The salesgirl, while recounting her ordeal at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Ughelli Central Hospital where she was receiving treatment, said the suspects came under the guise of wanting to purchase items from the store.

She said, “One of them hit me on the head and I screamed.I was rescued by a male neighbour, who rushed to the shop, after the suspects had fled the scene.”

It was later gathered that another member of the group was arrested along Market Road by policemen from the Ughelli Police Division.

The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Celestina Kalu, said she had not been briefed on the incident.

ASUU kicks against FG’s scrapping of Post-UTME - Education

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Wednesday, kicked against the Federal Government’s directive for tertiary institutions to scrap the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, for admission of candidates for the 2016/2017 academic session, saying the quality of tertiary education in the country could improve if the institutions are allowed to regulate their students admission process.

ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, said such freedom would enhance the quality of education.

Recall that at a recent joint policy meeting to decide the cut off mark for students seeking admission into the universities, the government announced the scrapping of post-unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

The Post UTME is the second stage of screening usually conducted by universities for the final selection of candidates qualified for admission for an academic session.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu had threatened to sanction any university or tertiary institution found conducting examinations under any guise to admit students.

He further directed tertiary institutions that had collected money from candidates for such purposes to immediately refund it or face appropriate sanctions.

The ASUU boss told NAN that such directive encroached on the autonomy of the institutions.

“I think government should give these institutions the chance to regulate themselves,” he said.

“They should decide for themselves, the process they dim fit to admit their students. The Senate of universities for example, should decide on the process they want to use in selecting candidates.

“We do not think it’s right for government to decide the method of screening of the candidates, indeed, we want to attain some level of sanity and quality in the system.”

The unionist added that government could only come into the process by putting in place the necessary guidelines as part of their oversight functions.

According to him, it may not also be easy for institutions that had already collected money for the conduct of the post-UTME or screening in whatever guise to refund such money.

He added that this was because such money could have been diverted to other purposes.

Ogunyemi noted that most universities were under-funded and therefore, might have used some of the money to attend to urgent needs of the institution.

“Some of the arguments raised in this entire episode is that universities or tertiary institutions were using the conduct of such examination to make money,” he said.

“But the truth is, these institutions are poorly funded. If universities for example are properly funded, will the vice-chancellors be looking for other means of making money?

“In the last seven months, university workers have been receiving incomplete salaries, that is, the disbursement of funds for payment of salaries has always been inadequate.

“When situations like this arise, the managements will not be left with any choice than to look inwards and seek means of meeting such needs.

“And one of such strategies is by conducting such examination.”

Ogunyemi noted that the state universities were worst hit for many of them had yet to receive subvention in the last one year.

“Actually we in ASUU frown at extortion of any type from students or candidates but the government too should be alive to its responsibilities by providing the enabling environment that will aid teaching, leaning and research.”

Attack on oil installations: We can’t pay salaries anymore, Okowa cries

WARRI—GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, has said the impact of the renewed destruction of oil assets in the state producing environment has gone so bad that the state is now unable to pay salaries regularly anymore. Okowa The governor, yesterday at the Government Office Annex, Warri, where he convened a stakeholders meeting on, “Creating A Peaceful Atmosphere for the Development of Delta State and the Niger Delta Region,” said: “The larger Nigerian government has been in financial crisis over dwindling oil prices. Increased production would have helped cushion the impact but instead we are faced with destruction of oil assets. “Dealing with dwindling oil prices and destruction of oil assets, we are now producing just half of our quota. And we are all really worried because of the greater effect is on Delta State. Before now we receive up to N20 billion monthly, but what we have  now is so low. Last time we got N3.4 billion. Last month what we received has dropped to N3 billion. We now get 1/7th of what we use to have.” The governor said, going by the current financial position, the state was no longer in a position to pay salaries regularly just as Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, has also nosedived. “We met a wage bill of N7.4 billion. Our workforce has been unchanged. With biometrics and rationalization, we trimmed that to about N6.8 billion. With the situation, we have in our hands, we are not in position to pay workers regularly anymore. “If we produce our normal volumes, we won’t have it this bad. We have had to reduce support to the councils. And apart from poor income from Federation Account, IGR has also gone down because money is not circulating. “I do know that we were receiving reasonable Pay As You Earn, PAYE of up to N1.5bn and N1.6bn monthly. That has gone down. We should realise there’s a challenge. Political office holders, traditional rulers should build peace. Delta State has been on the news for the wrong reasons and that’s not where we want to be,” Okowa added.

How Buhari’s Kitchen Cabinet Is Crumbling - Ripples Nigeria

Once touted as closely knit, Buhari’s kitchen cabinet appears to be crumbling in the face of growing ego conflicts, mutual suspicion as well as mounting allegations of corruption among its members, Ripples Nigeria investigations have shown.

Exactly a week ago, June 22 to be exact, the nation’s media space was awash with stories of President Buhari’s meeting with hundreds of State House staff. The gathering which appeared routine has since become subject of intense speculations.

An early pointer to unease within the system was the quiet grumblings that greeted Jalal Arbi, the State House Permanent Secretary, when he told the expectant crowd that they had been assembled to bid President Buhari a warm welcome from his medical trip abroad.

Arbi was quoted as having said to Buhari, “This is the congregation of your children privileged to work in the Villa. We have gathered to welcome you and reassure you of our commitment to integrity, accountability and most importantly fear of God. We pray God to continue to strengthen you and give you peace of mind and tranquility to govern.”‎

No questions were entertained from the motley crowd once Mr President was done with his speech.
The show of solidarity and support, inside sources confided in Ripples Nigeria, were meant to conceal growing disenchantment and portray cohesion within and among the fractured leadership of the President’s closest aides.

Coincidentally, on the same day, news broke of a major conflict involving, perhaps, three of the closest members of Buhari’s kitchen cabinet. An ego war was reported to have pitched Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, and Lawal Daura, DG, DSS against the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

The bone of contention, inside sources claim, was Magu’s “intransigence” over attempts by Abba Kyari and the DG DSS to pervert investigations and cover up corruption allegedly perpetrated by Jide Omokore of Sahara Energy, a known ally of Diezani Allison-Madueke, former Minister of Petroleum who is now embroiled in corruption scandal.

The in-fighting within the ranks is said to have been accentuated with the orchestrated arrest and detention of Air Commodore Umar Muhammed, a member of the presidential panel investigating arms procurement. The arrest was on the orders of the DSS boss, a co-member of the same panel.

Sources say the exercise was meant to nail Magu, the EFCC Chairman, as Commodore Umar is alleged to have acted as a front for him in the massive looting of state resources. Interestingly, Magu who is also a member of the same panel has washed his hands off the allegation, apparently to save his skin.

Sources tell Ripples Nigeria that the quiet rumblings within the kitchen cabinet have not gone un-noticed, and that President Buhari is said to be chewing softly on the matter because of its sensitive nature, and his well-known stance against corruption.

“He does not want to betray any emotions or trigger an alarm”, our source said.
Already, Buhari is said to be at a loss on how to deal with the rumoured move by his Chief of staff, Abba Kyari, to stall Magu’s confirmation which is still pending.

President Buhari’s headaches have not been made lighter as he figures what to also make of the allegations of corrupt enrichment hanging on the neck of his Chief of Army staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, who is largely seen as a poster boy for the administration.

Drunken cop dies after disagreement with girlfriend

The corpse of a policeman, Sergeant Godspower Okoro, has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital, Lagos State, for an autopsy to unravel the cause of his death.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Okoro, who was attached to the Alausa Police Division, was found dead in his rented apartment on Baale Street, Ojodu Berger, around 8am on Sunday.

It was gathered that the policeman had returned from duty around 7pm on Friday, reportedly drunk and did not go out until he was discovered dead two days later by his girlfriend.

The girlfriend, who had allegedly complained about his bad drinking habit, reportedly planned to take him to a church that morning.

Most residents were afraid to speak about the incident when our correspondent visited the residence on Tuesday.

However, the landlord’s wife, who identified herself simply as Iya Nimota, said she last saw Okoro around 7pm on Friday when he returned from work.

The woman, who spoke in Yoruba, said except for being drunk most times, the deceased was jovial and peaceful.

She added that Okoro and his girlfriend, whose name had yet to be ascertained, had a misunderstanding on Friday after he was allegedly drunk.

She said, “I don’t know what caused his death but  I know he drank a lot. When he returned from work that Friday, he was drunk. I saw him when he arrived.

“He was supposed to go for a morning duty on Saturday but I learnt he called his superior that he was weak and would not be able to go. It was his girlfriend who came on Sunday that found him dead. She raised the alarm and called for help.

“She said she had a disagreement with him on Friday when they met in Alausa because he was tipsy. She said she wanted to take him to a church for prayers on Sunday when she saw his corpse.

“My husband went to report at the Ojodu Police Station and some policemen came to remove his corpse. Nobody was arrested. He was friendly. Heavy drinking was his major problem.”

Another resident, who did not want his name in print, said the policeman had been cautioned several times to reduce his drinking to no avail.

“He was drunk on that Friday. He fell on the street when he was about to reach home and some people lifted him up. They wanted to take him home, but he refused.

“When he initially moved in here four years ago, he was not drinking. His friends cautioned him to reduce his drinking habit. If he had a wife, probably he would have changed,” he added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Okoro’s death, adding that a postmortem would be carried out on his body to ascertain the cause of his death.

She said, “At about 10am on Sunday, Sergeant Godspower Okoro attached to the Alausa division was found dead in his room on Baale Street. Detectives from the Ojodu divison visited, examined and photographed the scene. No mark of violence was found on the body.

“The corpse was removed and deposited at the Mainland General Hospital for autopsy.”

How U.S., France backed convicted Chad dictator, Habré — Report

The United States and France supported Hissène Habré, the former Chadian dictator who was convicted of atrocity crimes on May 30, 2016, throughout his rule, Human Rights Watch said in two reports released Tuesday.
The 64-page report, “Enabling a Dictator: The United States and Chad’s Hissène Habré 1982-1990s,” and the 142-page report, “Hissène Habré: Supported by France, Convicted by Africa,” describe how France, and especially the United States, were pivotal in bringing Habré to power, although signs of his brutality were already evident.
The two countries saw Habré as a bulwark against the expansionist designs of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, whose forces were occupying northern Chad. Human Rights Watch details how both the United States and France continued to provide Habré’s government with critical support, even as it committed widespread and systematic human rights violations.
“The United States and France were well aware of Habré’s brutal record, and yet continued to support him throughout his rule,” said Reed Brody, counsel at Human Rights Watch who has worked with Hissène Habré’s victims since 1999. “Both countries should examine how and why they supported a man convicted of crimes against humanity.”
Habré was convicted of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and torture, including sexual violence and rape, by the Extraordinary African Chambers in the Senegalese court system and sentenced to life in prison. The verdict came after his victims worked for more than two decades to see him put on trial.
Both the US and France should establish official inquiries to determine what officials knew about the commission of international crimes and whether any steps were taken to mitigate them, Human Rights Watch said.
In praising Habré’s “landmark” conviction, US Secretary of State John Kerry said it was “an opportunity for the United States to reflect on, and learn from, our own connection with past events in Chad”.
Habré’s one-party rule was marked by widespread atrocities, including waves of ethnic cleansing. Files of Habré’s political police, the Direction de la Documentation et de la Sécurité (DDS), which Human Rights Watchrecovered in 2001, reveal the names of 1,208 people who were killed or died in detention, and 12,321 victims of human rights violations.

Under President Ronald Reagan, the U.S. provided covert assistance in 1981 and 1982 to Habré’s rebel forces to help him unseat president Goukouni Oueddei, who was seen as pro-Libyan, and then gave Habré’s governmentmillions of dollars in military and security assistance.
While there is no evidence of direct U.S. involvement in or active support for international crimes in Chad, the former director of the DDS, speaking at his  torture trial in Chad in November 2014, said that he was “constantly assisted by a CIA agent who provided me with advice”.
Recovered DDS documents show that a U.S. embassy official whom the Chadians considered to be the “liaison” with the DDS visited the DDS headquarters – which included a torture chamber, and Habré’s underground“Piscine” prison – at the height of the repression against the Zaghawa ethnic group.
The United States also used a secret base in Chad to create and train a small army of anti-Gaddafi Libyan “contras” from among the ranks of captured Libyan troops. The leader of the “Contra” force was KhalifaHaftar. He now leads the Libyan National Army, which controls much of eastern Libya.
Despite the abduction of the French anthropologist Françoise Claustre by Habré’s forces in 1974 and the murder of Captain Pierre Galopin, who went to Chad to negotiate her release in 1975, France also supported Habré.
France provided him with arms, logistical support and information, and carried out large military operations to help Chad push back Libyan forces.
Each department of the Chadian military had a French adviser. The French intelligence service (DGSE) and the French Army also trained DDS and army officers, in some cases in France itself, including the current president, Idriss Déby Itno, who ousted Habré in a 1990 coup, and the former DDS director, Guihini Korei, who is now at large.
In one incident in mid-1983, France sent about 30 mercenaries to support Habré as he fought to stay in power against Libya and Libyan-backed Chadian factions. The mercenaries fought alongside Habré’s Chadian army troops at the battle of Faya-Largeau, where the army committed grave abuses. Shortly thereafter, France began Operation Manta, its largest deployment since the Algerian war. French airplanes were sometimes used to transport the government’s prisoners.
The Obama administration has strongly supported the victims in their campaign for justice.
In a June 2013 meeting in Dakar with Senegal’s president, Macky Sall, President Barack Obama hailed Senegal’s efforts to prosecute Habré.
In April 2016, after the trial but before the verdict, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, met in Chad with the victims and their lawyers, and praised their pioneering efforts.
The US government contributed US$1 million, and France contributed €300,000 to the court’s budget of approximately US$11 million.

Mother, triplets detained in hospital over N35,000 bill

baby

SEVEN weeks after she delivered a set of triplets, a housewife, Gloria Okore, has been detained by the management of a private hospital in Lagos over her inability to settle outstanding medical bills of N35,000 out of N120,000 incurred at the hospital. Mrs Okore, who delivered two girls and a boy on May 10 in Bessylva Hospital and Maternity Home, located at 60, Surulere Street, Dopemu-Agege, Lagos State, has been begging for help to raise the balance and cater for the children. Vanguard learned that the babies were delivered preterm (seven months), and one of the triplets, a female, died two weeks ago as there was no incubator to use for the babies. Gloria Okore told Vanguard that due to the hash economic situation in the country, the family needed the goodwill of Nigerians to take care of the babies. When Vanguard visited the hospital, the nursing mother, who was looking pale and unable to breastfeed the babies, was using an unkempt ward inside the hospital with no medical facilities. According to the 27-year-old Gloria, “I had the triplets through normal delivery, but the babies were born prematurely. We were charged N120,000. My husband hawks fairly-used clothes (okrika). It took him time to raise N85,000, which he paid in installments. “I am from Owerri in Imo State, while my husband is from Abia State. We got married three years ago. Before I had these triplets, I had twins who died immediately after birth. When I was pregnant for the triplets, I was very sick; I could not walk long distance because my belly was very big. “I want government to help pay the balance of the hospital bills and also help us with basic necessities for the babies. Right now I cannot work because the babies are still young.” She gave their bank account details as UBA: 2043213179 (Umeh Okore).

Could This Be The Reason Men Disrespect And Degrade Some Ladies.

Ever since the creation of the world, men have always seen and treated women As something to be used for sexual satisfaction.

Though there were, still is a few men who know the true value of women but they were and have been in minority since time immemorial.

Now, there was a time some learned women looked into this and realised that the way men treat Women is very wrong so they organized themselves and challenged men.

They fought hard to see that every woman gets the respects she deserves, that every woman should be treated as a human being first before gender.

fortunately their mission was successful but today's women actually want that old treatment.

It is clear from all indication that they wish to be treated like sex Objects. At least, that is what everything about them says.

Just take a look at these pictures.

What do you see?

The problem with these people isn't that they exposed their body[at least they wore it to an event which we all know is a place for indecent exposure] but that they are people's role models.

The reason I stopped watching Nigeria music videos is because what they show there is unclad senseless dancers who do not know that they can influence how people view women.

Who do not know that they portray how women are viewed, how they view themselves, and turning women into sex objects.

The New Women in the media are responsible for the degrading of women in our society because when their fans see them and copy from them, they present themselves as something to be used.

The funniest thing is that these women on media are the ones who always scream that women should be respected.

For what? Having breast?

They are the same people who not refer to women's beauty as intelligence, how good of a mother or a wife they are but how big their breasts and butt is.

Any attempt to correct them will get you responses like "Only God can judge me, you can’t”, “Leave them alone”,
“Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion”;
“Mind your business”.

I will mind my business truly but I cannot respect you.

Good dressing is good business. It will elicit respect from your fellow female folks and male folks.

Now Look at this picture.

Who among them deserves respect?

Maritime university to commence academic activities soon – Naval chief

Warri(Delta) – The Nigerian Navy said on Tuesday that the naval Maritime University in Ibuza, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta, would soon commence academic work. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, made the disclosure when he visited the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta in Warri. Ibas said that the process of obtaining the required approval for already constructed institution was being concluded. The naval chief said the proposed university was initially conceived as a Navy College. Ibas explained that the university was established in order to close academic gap which had necessitated the Nigerian Navy sending its personnel abroad to acquire some special skills. ”The moment the Federal Executive Council (FEC) grants the approval to commence operations, the university will start academic activities. “It is true that the Navy is in the process of obtaining the necessary clearance to have it converted to a university that will serve the navy as well as members of the public. “You will recall that the Navy undertakes a lot of its courses abroad in some civil institutions. ”So what the Navy has done is to go into partnership with some foreign partners who will assist us in establishing a school that will cater for the needs of the Navy in some areas we are currently deficient. “The process of getting the university licence is still on-going, we are contacting all the relevant agencies of government for approval,” he said. Ibas also attributed the relative peace in the Niger Delta region in respect of insurgency to the dialogue approach adopted by various organs of the government. ”You will recall that different organs of government have been dialoguing with the militants concerned, while the military maintains its posture of ensuring that militant activities are curtailed. ”For us as the Navy, in peace and war times, our duty is to ensure we police the general maritime areas and ensure that legitimate business thrives,” he said.

Nigeria’s sovereignty is negotiable, says Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation, saying the sovereignty of the nation is negotiable.

Speaking during a visit to PUNCH Place, the corporate headquarters of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Kilometre 14, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, on Tuesday, Soyinka said decentralisation of the nation would ensure healthy rivalry among the component units.

The laureate said it was wrong for previous administrations in the country to say that Nigeria’s sovereignty was non-negotiable, submitting that the position was antithetical to development.

Soyinka added, “I am on the side of those who say we must do everything to avoid disintegration. That language I understand. I don’t understand (ex-President Olusegun) Obasanjo’s language. I don’t understand (President Muhammadu) Buhari’s language and all their predecessors, saying the sovereignty of this nation is non-negotiable. It’s bloody well negotiable and we had better negotiate it. We better negotiate it, not even at meetings, not at conferences, but everyday in our conduct towards one another.

“We had better understand it too that when people are saying ‘let’s restructure’, they have better things to do. It’s not an idle cry; it is a perennial demand. The Pro-National Conference Organisation was about restructuring when this same Obasanjo said it was an act of treason for people to come together to fashion a new constitution. Those were fighting words; that you’re saying, ‘I commit treason because I want to sit with my fellow citizens and negotiate the structures of staying together’ and ask the police to go and break it up and arrest us.

“I remember that policeman, who said if we met, that would be treason. I wasn’t a member of PRONACO at the time. That’s when I joined PRONACO. If you’re saying to me, ‘I am a second-class citizen; I cannot sit down and discuss the articles, the protocols of staying together’ and you’re trying to bully me, I won’t accept.”

He said Nigeria could not continue with a centralisation policy, which encouraged what he described as “monkey dey work, baboon dey chop” mentality.

Soyinka said the over centralisation of government had resulted in resentment among constituent states, adding that the phenomenon was insulting and promoted anti-healthy rivalry among states.

He stated, “We cannot continue to allow a centralisation policy which makes the constituent units of this nation resentful; they say monkey dey work, baboon dey chop. And the idea of centralising revenues, allocation system, whereby you dole out; the thing is insulting and it is what I call anti-healthy rivalry. It is against the incentives to make states viable.”

He said the centralisation of government led to the proliferation of states during the military era when, according to him, a state was created because the girlfriend of a certain military leader hailed from the state.

He said it was high time government established state police to check the rising security challenges in the country, stressing that policing was more effective when localised.

Soyinka added, “I know people get nervous about that expression. If you go to a place like England, you sometimes see two, three, four police (officers) just walking casually unarmed, but they are observing everything.

“Now, if policing is all of that, then I think the police are more efficient if they are based within a smaller constituency than a larger one. Within such constituencies, the policeman virtually knows everybody. A federal, centralised system of police lacks that advantage.

“So, I find it very difficult to accept that people can be nervous about the state police. State police has been abused. Nobody is denying that; it’s historical. Don’t tell us because we know already. But isn’t centralised police also abused? Look at what’s been coming out from the last elections, not just the police, but the military.”

Condemning the killings perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen across the country, the Professor of Comparative Literature said the phenomenon had become an albatross that must be tackled frontally by the Federal Government.

Soyinka said the intrusive nature of Fulani herdsmen was no longer a remote problem for him personally, alleging that some Fulani herdsmen had invaded the privacy of his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“It is no longer a remote problem for me. It is an actuality,” he said, recalling that the killings carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Enugu some months ago was mismanaged by the government.

“In Enugu, why did it take so long to investigate the killings? It’s like the case of Ese Oruru. What is all this? What is security for? That thing should have been addressed immediately. (In Enugu), they shouldn’t have waited for directives from Buhari or anybody. This is a crime against humanity. There should be no debate about it.

“The military should have been drafted there immediately; the police, first of all, and the military – if necessary. I found out that the victims were arrested; what’s all that about? This menace is underestimated. If they had reached my secure place in Abeokuta, then it is no longer a remote problem.”

He faulted the proposal to create grazing reserves for herdsmen in the country, saying rather than do that, ranches, where members of the public could go to buy cows and goats, should be created.

The octogenarian said the term “grazing reserve” would convey the meaning that government had carved out some people’s land for herdsmen to use for their commercial enterprise.

“The word ‘reserve’ is the problem. If there are ranches, it doesn’t matter where they are built, ranches are a commercial proposition, it isn’t a Fulani issue. You can create ranches so that cows, goats could be bought there. This shouldn’t be an instrument of politics, race or ethnicity.

“But when you talk about reserves, it suggests that people can bring cattle from Futa Djallon, Senegal, and if they get here, they can get reserve. If it’s a ranch, it’s a pure commercial proposition, you want to trade. I will like to see these cattle people go back to the position they were before in which there was mutual collaboration between them and farmers,” he said.

Soyinka called on Buhari to consider the report of the 2014 National Conference convened during the tenure of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, lamenting that the country had been moving round in circles without direction.

“We have a habit of consigning files to the dust shelves and then we start all over again. The (confab) report that came under Jonathan is even more superior to the one that I participated in as a member of PRONACO and I think that should be addressed seriously.

“The recommendations strike me as workable, practical, and in fact, as answering some of the anxieties of this nation. This is something I think that Buhari should tackle seriously,” he said.

Court summons EFCC, Zenith Bank to defend freezing of Fayose’s account

The Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, has summoned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Zenith Bank Plc to show why an order exparte to unfreeze Governor Ayodele Fayose’s accounts now before it should not be granted.
Presiding judge, Taiwo Taiwo, gave Monday, July 4, 2016 for the EFCC (1st defendant) and the bank (2nd defendant) to appear before him with the necessary evidence.
Counsel to Mr. Fayose, Mike Ozekhome, had through an ex parte order, deposed to by Bimpe Olatemiju, sought a mandatory order unfreezing the accounts belonging to him pending the determination of his interlocutory application.
He sought the leave of the court for the service of the originating summons on the defendants in their various addresses outside the jurisdiction of the court as contained on the order papers, supported by 17-paragraph affidavit.
Mr. Ozekhome said the order was brought pursuant to order 26 rule 8(1) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rule 2009 and Section 44(1) of the 1999 constitution which gives the court the discretionary powers to adjudicate on such matter.
Citing the case of Abdulaziz Nyako Vs EFCC, he argued that the anti-graft agency had no power to freeze Mr. Fayose’s account without a valid court order.
Mr. Ozekhome added the action was a flagrant negation of the Section 308 of the Constitution, which conferred absolute immunity on the government against civil and criminal procedure.
He said it was appalling that the EFCC could play ostrich to these valid constitutional requirements before taking the punitive stand against Mr. Fayose, adding that these infractions had rendered the action unconstitutional, wrongful, and null and void.

Civil War in Delta APC: As Ogboru, Ochei join

Everywhere Great Ogboru goes, he gathers momentum. So, the formal entry of Ogboru and erstwhile Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Victor Ochei into the opposition All Progressives Congress, is generating the kind of fireworks that can only be generated by the movement of the famed Peoples General. By Perez Brisibe Controversy over why yesterday’s formal entry of Great Ogboru and Victor Ochei into the APC was staged at the national headquarters is bound to elicit the interest of many. Ogboru had in the past shown his capacity to mobilise crowds in his native Delta State. Or could it be that the Ogboru brand now pumped up with the strategic imprints of Ochei has failed to provoke interest in the face of the developmental efforts of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa? However, given the internecine civil war that has been in the state chapter of the party in the past two years or so, it is doubtful that a successful or a smooth entry could reception could have been accorded Ogboru and Ochei. Erue led executive At the heart of the issues is that the state chapter has been without an acceptable state executive since the Prophet Jones Erue led executive was sacked by the courts almost two years ago. The Erue executive was sacked at the behest of the Chief Adolo Okotie-Eboh led tendency of the party. Okotie-Eboh, who came into the party from the old Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN group was peeved that what could have been his inheritance in the APC was being challenged by the moneyed political group that joined the party just before the last general elections. That group is led by the party’s last governorship candidate, Otega Emerhror, who is believed to be the prop for Erue. Yet another group in the state APC is that comprising of the original elders comprising such party grandees as Senator Francis Okpozo,  former member of the House of Representatives, Temi Harriman among others. Adding to the milieu is even the latest group of joiners led by Chief Ayiri Emami who joined the party just after the presidential elections. Against the background of the differing contentions is the claim in some quarters that some especially the elders were against the entry of Ogboru into the party. Describing the defection of Ogboru to the APC as a plus to the party, Cyril Ogodo, deputy chairman of the Erue faction of the party accused the APC Elders Committee of not being comfortable with the entry of Ogboru and Ochei into the party. Ogboru and Ochei According to Ogodo, “We do not know the reason why they are not comfortable with the entry of Ogboru and Ochei into the party. What is a party? It is a group of persons and the more, the merrier because majority wins the vote. Vowing to apply sanctions against Okpozo and the elders he claimed were against the development, Ogodo said: “We have written to their council chairmen and ward leaders on sanctions to be taken against them, and this have been done at all levels, and very soon they would hear from us. Okpozo keeps mum: Though Senator Spanner Okpozo declined to comment on the impasse when contacted, he stressed that he would not speak on the matter till after Tuesday, June 28. He said: “As far as I am concerned, I have never seen any disagreement in the party, if Ogboru is coming into the party, he knows the procedure, and if O’tega Emerhor is trying to make any alteration in the party, he too knows the procedure. As far as I am concerned, I have no connection with what is happening.” Okpozo makes mockery of plots to suspend him Speaking of the supposed plot to suspend him and members of the Delta State APC Elders Committee, Okpozo said: “Can you imagine the owner of the house being removed from the house without legally being ousted in any matter that is outrageous? What I know is that disagreement between two persons cannot be run on the pages of a newspaper not to talk of an organization like a political party.” The federal board appointment connection However, findings by Vanguard have revealed that the agitation in the party might be connected to the agitation for appointments into federal government boards with a section of the party having the view that new comers may upset them in the appointments. In reaffirming the position of the party on the matter, the state secretary of the party and the legal adviser, Chidi Okonji and Valentine Onojeghuo in a response to a communiqué signed by Senator Okpozo and six others at the end of a meeting held on June 12 at Okpozo’s residence, Ozoro, accused Okpozo and his group of rejecting the idea of new members, particularly Ogboru and Ochei into the party. Federal board appointments The party in the statement said: “It is the view of the agitators that the party ought to wait so as not to short-change old members, for the fear that the new comers may out stage them on federal board appointments slots.” Okpozo and his group had at the meeting, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the APC NWC to constitute a broad-based caretaker committee for the state chapter of the party failure of which they would constitute same without further delay. Reacting to the ultimatum, Ogodo said: “If Okpozo gives the NWC ultimatum and the NWC refuses to do what he asks for, the best thing for him to do is that he should go and close down the office of the NWC.” Speaking on the anticipation of members of the party in the state, a chieftain of the party in the state and former member representing Ethiope East in the House of Representative, Hon. Solomon Edoja said: “You know democracy is about the majority, and it’s the majority that carries the day, so the more, the merrier for us in the APC ahead of the 2019 general elections.”

DELTA GOVT TO RIVERINE COMMUNITIES: Prepare for another round of flooding

ASABA—DELTA State Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Mr Chika Ossai, has advised those residing in riverine communities of the state to take proactive measures to avoid being caught by the impending flood to check unnecessary casualties. File: Flooded community Ossai who gave the advice in Asaba, stressed the need for those leaving in flood prone areas to prepare for another round of flooding this rainy season. He said: “It is important that we prepare for flood, this is rainy season and we should not be taken unawares because that will be disastrous. We don’t want any casualty as a result of flood. We at the Bureau for Special Duties, the State Emergency Relief Agency in conjunction with the National Emergency Management Agency are prepared to tackle any emergency situation, but, it is better to avoid any unhealthy occurrence.” Noting that last year’s flood could have been disastrous if not for the awareness created by government, he said; “There is nothing wrong in taking precautionary measures. “We should adopt safety measures, especially, those of us in flood-prone areas because, water will not give prior warning before it overflows its banks.” On the incessant flooding of Asaba metropolis, Ossai said “It is unfortunate that whenever it rains, some parts of the town is flooded,” saying “government is working towards effective flood control in the state capital. “We should also help ourselves by clearing our drains, especially on days declared for sanitation. We should imbibe good habits towards our environment; we should not block the drains or build on waterways. We should learn to dispose our wastes properly and the situation will not be as bad as we are witnessing.”

http://www.nairaland.com/3193718/why-nigerian-ladies-grow-out

I met some former colleagues of mine whom I'd seen about 6 years ago. Believe me, while I was able to recognize all the guys, it was a Herculean task identifying all the ladies, most of whom I knew to be slim/trim/curvy and unmarried then. Almost all of these once-slim ladies are now looking big and fat and absolutely less plummy than they used to be.

Why is it hard for MANY married ladies to stay trim and sexy? Is marriage a "breakthrough from hunger" or what? And why do they express shock when their husbands go after trim and shapely ladies outside? Is it that they didn't know that men are typically motivated by sensual sights?

I've seen a lot of ladies in their 30s who are so lazy to even take a 20 minutes walk in a week, at least just to exercise and burn some fat. Let's not even mention going to the gym. They drive or board okada all their lives. And when they eat, you'd ve amazed at the amount of calories they consume!

Are this category of ladies aware that the game is becoming dangerously tighter because "oga" is constantly inundated with young, trim, energetic and sexy girls on a daily basis; while his own wife keeps growing fat and out of shape and looking like his mother? Guys, do you like your wife looking like she's your mum?

Electricity: 1,000MW of IPP capacity idle due to gas shortage

Electricity-new

NIGERIA is far from achieving its objective of a regular power supply as 1,000 MW of Independent Power Plant, IPP, capacity are idle due to a lack of gas delivery. The President of Nigerian Gas Association, NGA, Mr. Bolaji Osunsanya, who stated this during a chat with journalists in Lagos, also said that indigenous players are making significant strategic investments in gas and virtual pipelines to power IPPs and industrial customers. According to him, the gradual movement of the market towards the concept of “willing buyer, willing seller”, and the government’s willingness to ensure an investment-friendly environment, will engender Nigeria’s long term gas development. His assertions came as he informed that NGA will hold a business forum this week. He said, “For a sector with over $55 billion worth of investment opportunities, we are extremely positive of growth in the economy and the potentials for growth in key areas such as exploration and production, processing, supply, and distribution. Also, the NGA’s 2016 business forum will hold on June 29th together with our Annual General Meeting. At the forum, industry stakeholders and policy makers will share perspectives on strategies to re-energize and maximize our natural gas potentials. He explained that feedback from our members suggests that there is significant interest in exploring for and/or developing a local natural gas industry in Nigeria; There will be wider environmental benefits for the country if that increased gas use displaces some elements of coal-fired energy generation; The Nigerian  economy will benefit from gas developments through increased energy security; and Increased availability of natural gas will enable Nigeria to maintain its drive in the gas-to-liquids sector. “Indeed, the government has taken some positive steps to develop gas including the Gas Master Plan rolled out in 2008 along with partial privatization of the power sector over the last two to three years. This has led to a significant increase in the price for natural gas supplied for power generation to around US$2.50/Mscf with further increases requested by producers,” he added.

Man Who Steals Female Panties Caught - Photo

As the Trial of Saraki and Ekweremadu & co was proceeding, I heard the noise of a mob outside our fence. I checked out to see what's going on. Alas! The guy in the pic below is being lynched by the mob. I moved closer to find out his offense, I realized he used to go round to steal panties (especially of females) hung on the line. After being tortured for some hours, he confessed he has been in the business for a while, and he's being sponsored by some people. He said the leader pays him N500 per a panty. He claimed to come from Akinmoorin in Afijio LG. I appealed to the mob not to take law into their hands via Jungle Justice, rather they should let us hand him over to the believed "unfaithful" NPF corps. They agreed with me and we immediately invited the corps, then handed him over to them. He also confessed a "Babalawo" is their sponsor.

Dasuki authorised payment of $40m to Jonathan’s cousin’s company – witness

A prosecution witness, Ibrahim Mahir, has testified that retired Col. Sambo Dasuki authorised the payment of 40 million dollars in favour of One Plus Holdings. Mahir made this known when he testified in the case of Azibaola Roberts, cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. He said that Dasuki, a former National Security Adviser (NSA), instructed him to prepare a payment mandate of 40 million dollars in favour of the company. Roberts and his wife Stella were arraigned on June 8 on a seven-count charge of money laundering. Mahir, who was the first prosecution witness, told the court that Dasuki had endorsed a memo to him with details of the company’s account. “On Aug. 20, 2014, the NSA endorsed a memo to me which originated from the director of finance and administration in the office of the NSA giving bank details of a company called One Plus. “The memo also gave details of the purpose for which the company was to be paid the sum of 40 million dollars. “The NSA instructed me to prepare payment and my understanding of that was that I should prepare the payment mandate for One Plus for his signature. “After I got the memo, I prepared the payment mandate, sent it to him, he signed and sent it back to me. “The subsequent necessary action was for me to countersign, which I did and I sent it to the CBN for payment,’’ Mahir said. Earlier, Roberts lead counsel, Mr Chris Uche (SAN), had applied for a short adjournment. Uche said the adjournment would give him time to meet with his client to prepare his defence. He said that when bail was granted, his team had difficulties in perfecting the bail conditions, adding that the conditions were only perfected last week. He said they needed more time to prepare their defence because there were some documents that they needed to subpoena from the office of the NSA. Uche also sighted indisposition as part of the reasons his team was asking for an adjournment. The prosecuting counsel, Mr Sylvanus Tahir, however, objected to the application on the grounds that they had a witness already in court who was stopped from going on lesser hajj on account of the trial. Tahir said that they had prevailed on the witness to postpone his trip and not allowing him to give his testimony would amount to a waste of effort. On the issue of indisposition, Tahir said the defence had about 19 other lawyers on the team and without the lead counsel, trial could commence. The judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, agreed with the prosecution that trial should commence since the defence had sufficient time to prepare their defence. Diimgba adjourned the case till July 4 and July 5 for continuation of trial.

FG dares Varsities: Conduct Post-UTME, face sanctions

Abuja—Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, yesterday, reiterated the Federal Government’s ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, conducted by tertiary institutions for admission into universities and other higher schools of learning in the country. Adamu told journalists in Abuja that any institution that violates the directive will be punished by the Federal Government. He said: “The ban is with immediate effect and under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive. Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the Post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately. “If any tertiary institution has already conducted Post-UTME, such an exercise stands annulled and money taken from candidates must be refunded immediately.” He said the emphasis had become necessary to ensure that no stakeholder was left in doubt about government’s position on the matter. He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, any educational institution, after secondary education, is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore, all tertiary institutions, by whatever name it is called, after secondary education, must be subjected to admission through JAMB.” He added that universities were at liberty to expel any student who failed to meet up with the requirements for any degree enrolled for. He said there was no empirical evidence to show that since the inception of Post-UTME, universities had been having better students, adding that students were still being expelled annually for low performance, even as they gained admission through Post-UTME. He said parents and guardians spend fortunes on transportation, hotel accommodation, examination fees and sundry costs, just for their wards to gain admission into universities; while in some cases, parents die in the process of travelling to secure admission for their wards, a situation he described as painful and avoidable. Adamu directed the National Universities Commission, NUC, and the appropriate departments in the ministry to communicate this directive to relevant agencies and institutions to ensure strict compliance.

Boko Haram cyber terrorists behind Dubai property allegations – Army Chief

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has described those behind the issue of the acquisition of two properties by his family in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, as defeated Boko Haram terrorist on migration to the nation’s cyberspace.

Buratai said that the cyber terrorists would be defeated the same way their counterparts on land were defeated by the Nigerian Army under his leadership in the North East.

He said that the Army was already developing its cyber warriors to counter the nefarious intents of the terrorists on migration to the Internet and online media houses.

The Army Chief said that the Federal Government had already made clarifications on the issue of the properties in Dubai through a statement that was issued by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali on Monday.

The Defence Minister had said that the report on the properties was an attempt by some persons to distract the leadership of the Armed Forces from the successful prosecution of the heightened campaign against terrorism in the North East.

Dan-Ali who described the report as a campaign of calumny targeting the image of the Army Chief, explained that the the Army Chief had declared the properties before the Code of Conduct Bureau which could be verified.

Buratai said that the Army would not be distracted by the antics of those behind the report in its efforts to ensure national security.

He stated also that the allegation that refurbished equipment were procured in the fight against the insurgents was part of the campaign of calumny masterminded by the cyber terrorists.

He said, “I am not supposed to comment on this because the Federal Government has already made a statement on that through the Ministry of Defence. But if you want my take on the issue, it is that we have already defeated the terrorists and the insurgents on the land, now they have migrated to the cyberspace, they have migrated to the Internet and other electronic media and so on.

“We want to assure them that these terrorists, the Boko Haram terrorists, who have migrated to the cyberspace, we will follow them to that cyberspace, and equally defeat them and clear their doubts.

“We are meeting all the terrorists in the cyberspace, we have defeated them, in the battle ground. We are developing our own cyber warriors and we will defeat them as we have done in the North East.

“The issue of the refurbished equipment is still part of campaign of calumny. I refer you to the theatre commander. We are doing internal audit, they know my position. We will continue to do that. Definitely, the way we defeated them, we will defeat them in the cyber space.”

How we plan to end hardship in Nigeria — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has formally launched measures being taken by his administration to reduce the current economic hardship being faced by Nigerians.
The president on Sunday formally unveiled what he called “by far the most ambitious social protection programme” in Nigeria’s history.
There is widespread poverty in the land today owing largely to certain policies of the federal government, which, the president said were “necessary pills” to swallow in order to have a better future.
Speaking on Sunday in a national broadcast to mark his one year in office, Mr. Buhari said the social protection programme would seek to start the process of lifting many citizens out of poverty, while at the same time creating the opportunity for many to fend for themselves.
“In this regard, five hundred billion Naira has been appropriated in the 2016 budget for social intervention programmes in five key areas,” he said.
He also said his administration was committed to providing job creation opportunities for five hundred thousand teachers and one hundred thousand artisans across the nation.
“5.5 million children are to be provided with nutritious meals through our school feeding programme to improve learning outcomes, as well as enrolment and completion rates.

Buhari agrees to fund Jonathan govt’s job initiative, Youwin

The Federal Government is to consult with beneficiaries and other concerned parties on the restructuring and refocusing of the multi-billion Naira Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) programme, with the objective of injecting new ideas for its sustainability, the finance ministry has said.
The programme, initiated by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 as part of the government’s job creation initiatives, provides grants to about 1200 people to start small businesses each year.
It also made provisions for the training of entrepreneurs.
A statement from the ministry said 18, 000 young entrepreneurs were trained in various aspects of Small and Medium Enterprises management and business skills; and 3, 900 of them, including 1, 200 women, were each given non-repayable take-off grants for businesses of their choice ranging from N1 million up to a maximum of N10 million.
Beneficiaries who were yet to receive payment before the Jonathan government ended in 2015, had accused the Buhari government of abandoning the programme and refusing to finance their projects.
But the finance ministry says the third edition of the programme, which is still running with 1,500 beneficiaries, has received N11.2 billion in funding, and so far grants totaling N7.4 billion have been disbursed to the awardees.
In June 2016 alone, the sum of N1.687 billion was paid to 638 awardees, the finance ministry’s statement signed by the spokesman, Salisu Danbatta, said.
The statement said the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, promised that the YouWin programme will be restructured to ensure efficiency, transparency and accountability in investing the capital grants given to the beneficiaries by the Federal Government.

Mrs. Adeosun confirmed that all FG commitments under the YouWIN programme will be fully met, but due diligence would be carried out on every beneficiary, using tools like the Bank Verification Number (BVN), and before disbursements.
The Federal Ministry of Finance, which has been running the programme from inception, has scheduled the consultation for July 22, in Abuja, where representatives of the beneficiaries drawn from the six-geo-political zones and other concerned parties would chart a way forward for the programme.

Top 5 Reasons Computers Crash And Precaution

Computer Crash is the last thing any computer owner want to experience. The list below gives the top 5 reasons computers crash and they are:

5) Bad RAM: Our elementary school teachers already taught us the meaning of RAM and what it does. A bad RAM could slow down the rate of data processing of a computer and as well as makes computers lose their memory suddenly, leading to a blue screen which forcefully shut down the computer. This will later result in a crash Hard Disk or corrupt Operating System.

4) Viruses: Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses etc are the major malwares that can cause computer crash. Just like the way AIDS, Malaria and Fever would frustrate human and can lead to death; computer viruses could cause alot of damage to your computer and even cause a compter crash.
Viruses can modify computer registry, deleted files and corrupt Operating Systems.

3) Power Surge: In a third world country where power supply is erratic. It can be annoying that you may not get power supply for a week; only for the power to damage your PC when it is eventually supplied due to power surge.

2) Overheating: I gave OverHeating the second position on the list because I see it as one of the major reasons for computer crash.
Computer parts are mainly made of metal and plastics. The metal part usually a copper conducts alot of heat. If the heat is not regulated, it can make the processor to forcefully shutdown during operation, leading to Hard disk damage or even burn the processor.

1) Dust: Yes! dust is the number one on the list. Dust got this position because I found out that this tinny particles in our environment is the greatest culprit causing damage to our computer. The reason being that dust has the ability to penetrate the space inside computer and block the connections between components; leading to partial contact and short-circuit in components.

Precaution: Install a strong Anti-virus and update it regularly. Never accept flash drive from an untrusted clients but you can use a CD instead. Above all, do a full scan of your PC atleast once in a month.

3) Power Surge: In a third world country where power supply is erratic. It can be annoying that you may not get power supply for a week; only for the power to damage your PC when it is eventually supplied due to power surge.

Precaution: Never plug your computer in wait for power to be supplied. Power supply after a long outage can surge above the regular voltage required by your Personal Computer. If you use a desktop, using an inverter is recommended.

Precaution: Always operate your computer in a cool environment. Shut down when you discover the heat from the underside of the computer is much. This allows the processor to cool down.

You can also check to see if the internal fan in your computer is working effectively.

Precaution: Always keep your computer away from dust and take your computer (especially a laptop) to an engineer for servicing if you hear any irregular noise inside your computer or you see something like dust or smoke oozing out from the fin side (fan area) of the computer.

Since you now know the reasons for computers crash. Ignorance is no more an excuse for being a victim of a crash computer. Have a nice weekend and please comment below if you have any question.

Itsekiri may fight back, Newuwumi warns Avengers

SAPELE- FORMER  Member of the Delta Waterways Security Committee, DWSC, Warri, Delta State and ex-Itsekiri warlord, Comrade Omolubi Newuwumi, aka ‘Gentle General,”    has warned that the Itsekiri ethnic nationality would defend itself if the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, does not desist from the provocative bombing oil and gas installations in its (Itsekiri) territory. Avengers & Newuwumi Newuwumi, the Itsekiri equivalent of Ijaw‘s Tompolo and former Commissioner for Youths in the state , told Niger Delta Voice: “The bombing of oil and gas facilities in Itsekiri territory is  absurd; it is an act capable of provoking the Itsekiri nation and personalities like me. I am categorically saying that if they continue, they may force us, Itsekiri, to protect our territory, especially if the present administration fails in their responsibilities to protect lives and properties. “ Bombings of oil installations He said: “We will be prepared to assist the government to end the bombings of oil installations in our area just like the role of the civilian JTF in the north, which has yielded successful results. As I said before, the destruction caused us by the Ijaw, which wanted to wipe us (Itsekiri) from the earth’s surface is still there, years after the crisis ended. “The memories are still fresh in our mind for those of us who lived to tell the sad tales of woes and wanton destruction and killings in our communities. We will not fold our hands this time to let them destroy us as they did before. “The then federal and state governments failed to protect us from the Ijaw until we decided to take our own destiny into our hands and defend ourselves. I just hope this present government will not abandon us to our fate,” he added. Why Itsekiri youths are not throwing bombs: On why Itsekiri youths were not carrying arms and bombing pipelines in the creeks like their Ijaw counterparts, he said: “Itsekiri people are a group of intellectuals, peace -loving and law- abiding people, hence carrying guns is not a way of life for them. If you look at history, you will find out that it was an Itsekiri man, the late Justice Atake that first started the intellectual struggle for resource control even before Ken Saro Wiwa. “So the struggle is not a new thing for us, it is just that we are not used to militancy, kidnapping and other forms of criminality in our fight for true federalism and equality for the region. Anyway, we are soon coming out with a formidable platform to tackle all these issues because the Itsekiri have kept silent for a while now. New group: “Very soon, a new group, which is non-political called the Niger Delta Patriotic Front, NDPF, will emerge and come out with its agenda and demands. There will be no genuine negotiation without the full involvement of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality because in Delta for example, the numbers of oil wells in Itsekiri land is much more than that of any other tribe,” he asserted. Encounters with Tompolo: On his attitude towards the struggle and what makes it different from Tompolo’s, ‘Gentle General’ said: “We share different ideologies. In the war (referring to Ijaw/Itsekiri war),    the Ijaw, which Tompolo led was more like the aggressor, but I only rose to lead my people in defense when the government of that time failed to defend us against our more formidable opponents for more than two years.” Total annihilation Newuwumi said he had met with Tompolo on two occasions in the Benin River and his defunct Camp 5. His words: “Yes, during the battle to save my people from total annihilation from the surface of the earth, we met during the Warri crisis. I remember an occasion in the Benin River when I was coming from rescuing my people stranded in Ogheye community. I will tell that story at a later date. “However, beyond that, we both represent different things to different people. Maybe we might be fighting the cause of liberating the people of the region from socio-economic slavery in the midst of plenty, but we sure have different ideologies and different ways of looking at things. “I for one, I repeat once again, abhor violence, kidnapping and destruction of government and oil companies’ installations to get even with government, but maybe he has a different approach. “The choice of non-violence is a personal decision, which I have taken for a long time, but that does not mean that we, as Itsekiri, are weak, we only look at things from different perceptive. I am still a gentle general, as my people know me very well. It is just that I choose to remain calm and peaceful.  “My second encounter was when we met also in his Camp 5 when we agreed to put an end to the crisis between the Itsekiris and the Ijaw. Like my first encounter, I will tell the story of my second encounter on a latter day.”     Avengers formed to destabilize Buhari govt: Scrutinizing the   NDA and its mission, he said: “The pattern of their operation is very clear and an indication that it was formed to frustrate the present administration. The destruction of pipelines and oil installations is unmistakably terrorism and economic sabotage. Simply put, they are faceless, senseless and partisan in nature, and an orchestrated attemipt devised by corrupt individuals and politicians to frustrate the present administration’s resolve and determination to fight corruption in the country.” He went on: “They are only using fighting for resource control for the Niger Delta as a means to achieve their egotistical desires because if not for their own selfish desire, why are they asking the federal government to release some individual found to be involved in corrupt practices.” Newuwumi added: “Another aspect of the Avengers is the deliberate attacks on oil installations, which apart from killing the already Nigeria fragile economy is also destroying the region’s environment and its ecosystem. The destruction affects the immediate environment and health of the people the Avengers claim to protect.” He also said: “Like the name, Avengers, I think it was primarily formed to avenge the prosecution of their brothers and some corrupt Nigerians, who are facing criminal charges, if not, what are they avenging and who are they avenging for?” Attacks on Ayiri Emami On the attacks by Ijaw people on Itsekiri leader, Chief Ayiri Emami, who has been very vocal against the Avengers, he said: “Without mincing words, those who are blaming him chose to run away from the obvious fact. The Niger Delta area is a peculiar terrain, where everybody seems to know each other.   Nobody, I repeat nobody or group of persons will dare carry out such nefarious activities in backyard of the person he is pointing fingers at without his knowledge or him knowing them.” Whom do Avengers represent? Commenting on the plan to negotiate with Avengers, he said: “It just a pity that the Nigeria government has concluded arrangements to negotiate with them just like the amnesty deal. But to me, it is very unfortunate, especially with some of the conditions in their demands like the release of   Col Sambo Dasuki (retd)   and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu , which has no bearing whatsoever with the Niger Delta struggle. “Well, let them negotiate with them; let us see what their demands are really and the persons behind the masquerade. It will also let us know or confirm if the person they said Ayiri is pointing fingers at is behind the whole arrangement. However, beyond all these, the question on my mind are who do they want to negotiate with, for whom are they negotiating and is it for the ethnic nationalities of the Niger Delta or for only the Ijaw? “Who are those to go there to negotiate with government? In whose interest, I do not think the negotiations will work because already the components of the formation of the group, NDA, is faulty, their demands are faulty and did not articulate all the demands of the Niger Delta people.  “Just like the amnesty program,   which made some individuals super rich and a particular ethnic group very rich, the negotiation is bound to fail unless the Federal Government do what is right for the people of the Niger Delta,” Newuwumi declared.
