The England midfielder had held talks with the Cherries and Crystal Palace on Tuesday, while Roma had also shown interest in signing the 24-year-old.

But the Gunners refused to do business with Roma because of the way they handled a potential move for defender Kostas Manolas earlier this summer.

The Cherries have also completed the signing of Romanian teenager Mihai Dobre.

The 18-year-old winger, who arrives from FC Viitorul Constanta, will join Bournemouth's under-21 squad.

Meanwhile, German side Werder Bremen have taken Serge Gnabry, 21, on loan while defender Calum Chambers, 21, has joined Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.

Ex-husband of Senator Stella Oduah, Lt-Col. Satchie Emmanuel Etoromi (rtd.) pleaded on Wednesday with the ex-Aviation Minister to return the body of his late son, Maxwell Chinedu Toritseju Etoromi, for proper burial in Warri, Delta State.

Cief Etoromi, who spoke with journalists in Warri shortly after sending a powerful delegation to his royal majesty, Igwe D. O. Oduah, the Igwe of Akili Ozizor, Ogbaru in Anambra State, expressed sadness over the death of his son and how he was treated by the Senator.

In his letter to the royal father titled, “Appeal To Intercede to Ensure Senator Stella Adaeze Oduah Brings My Son, Maxwell Chinedu Obiechina Wereyesigha Toritseju Etoromi To Me In Warri For Burial,” the bereaved father said he read about the death of their 28 years old son in the newspapers without being informed by his ex-wife.

“His Royal Highness Igwe Oduah 1 betrothed Stella Oduah to me on 18th November 1984 in Akili Ozizor. We married on the 16th of December 1984 in His Highness`s Palace in Akili Ozizor. After the payment of dowry and exchange of gifts, we were taken to Nde-Mili where we performed the final rites.

“I am surprised to see in the internet stories that my son Maxwell Omabuwa Temisanre Obiechina Wereyesigha Toritseju Chinedu Etoromi who Stella delivered for us on 14th March 1988 at 05.00 hour in St Mary`s Hospital Ugboroke Warri is dead”, the bereaved father said in the letter.

He alleged that up till now, his enstranged wife had not contacted him on the death of their son only for her to commence preparation to bury him last Friday in her home town.

“Up till now Stella has not told me my son died in her custody. There is rumour that my son will be buried in Akili Ozizor. That is not acceptable at all. My son must be brought to me in Warri for internment”, he lamented.

In the letter which was copied to Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, The Arch-Bishop of Onitsha, and the Parish Priest, Father, Donald Uzoh of Sacred Heart Parish, the bereaved father insisted that his late son must be returned for proper burial in his father’s place.

Chief Etoromi explained to the monarch that the stories needed not be told now, but his grief at Omabuwa`s transition was too much to bear, hence he is is reacting this way.

It would be recalled that Akili Ozizor, the quiet country home of Nigeria’s former Aviation minister and presently the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone,Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah, last Monday witnessed an unusual heavy vehicular and human movement when sympathisers, friends and dignitaries from across Anambra state rallied for vigil mass for the peaceful repose of the soul of late master Maxwell Chinedu, son of Senator Oduah who died last Friday at the age of 28.

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff Impeached By Brazilian Senate

Brazil's Senate has voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office for manipulating the budget.
It puts an end to 13 years in power of her left-wing Workers' Party. Ms Rousseff denies the charges.
Sixty-one senators voted in favour of her impeachment and 20 against, meeting the two-thirds majority needed to remove her from the presidency.
Acting President Michel Temer will serve out Ms Rousseff's term, which ends on 1 January 2019.

Mr Temer, from the centre-right PMDB party, is expected to be officially sworn in later on Wednesday.
'Coup d'etat'
Ms Rousseff had been suspended in May after the Senate voted to go ahead with the impeachment process.

She was accused of moving funds between government budgets, which is illegal under Brazilian law.
Her critics said she was trying to plug deficit holes in popular social programmes to boost her chances of being re-elected for a second term in October 2014.

Ms Rousseff fought the allegations, which she said amounted to a coup d'etat.
She argued that her right-wing political rivals had been trying to remove her from office ever since she was re-elected.

Born in 1947, grew up in an upper middle class household in Belo Horizonte
Her father was Bulgarian immigrant and an ex-communist
Joined left-wing movement against Brazil's military dictatorship which had seized power in 1964
Detained in 1970 and imprisoned for three years
Subjected to torture including electric shocks for her role in the underground resistance
Came to political prominence as the protege of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who governed Brazil from 2003 to 2011
Sworn in as Brazil's first female president in 2011
Re-elected to a second term in 2014
Impeached on 31 August 2016
"From the day after I was elected, several measures were taken to destabilise my government. And you have been systematically making accusations against me," she said when she defended herself in the Senate on Monday.
She said that she was being ousted because she had allowed a wide-ranging corruption investigation to go ahead which resulted in many high-profile politicians being charged.

Analysis by Daniel Gallas, BBC South Americas Business Correspondent
Dilma Rousseff's impeachment trial in the Senate has raised important questions about Brazil's democratic institutions.
Was she ousted for having committed a crime - or was that just a pretext to remove a president who had lost control of the economy and politics?
Her fiscal manoeuvres were thoroughly examined during the sessions, but it was not just that which was on trial.
Her government policies, her U-turn on the economy after the election and corruption in her party were constantly part of the debate.
Also, as the trial unfolded, Michel Temer's interim government started its work reforming the economy and outlining new policies.
Senators - and Brazilians - knew that the question of condemning Ms Rousseff went beyond just deciding technically whether she was guilty or not.
Read Daniel Gallas' analysis in full
But senators who voted in favour of her impeachment said it was Ms Rousseff and the Workers' Party who were corrupt and needed to go.
Brazilians have been divided on the issue, with many expressing their support and loyalty to Ms Rousseff while others have taken part in large demonstrations demanding that she stand down.

Mr Temer, who will govern until 1 January 2019, has promised to boost Brazil's economy, which is going through its longest and deepest recession in the past quarter of a century.
His critics have already warned that he plans to cut many of the popular social programmes introduced by the Workers' Party.

Aero Contractors Airlines Nigeria Suspends Operation

Aero Contractors Airlines, Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier, has confirmed an exclusive report of The PUNCH by announcing the suspension of its scheduled services beginning from Thursday September 1, 2016.

On Monday, August 22, 2016, The PUNCH exclusively reported that the airline was set to lay off some of its workers due to its worsening financial crisis.

The report also noted that the carrier was in talks with aviation unions on how to cut down on the number of workers in its employ, after sources from the sector revealed that Aero was contemplating a suspension of its scheduled flight services.

Confirming this in a statement signed by the carrier’s management on Wednesday, Aero stated that the suspension was part of the strategic business realignment to reposition the airline and return it to profitability.

It stated that this “business decision”, which is a result of the current economic situation in the country, had forced some other airlines to suspend operations or pull out of Nigeria.

The management of the carrier said the airline had faced grave challenges in the past six months which impacted its business and by extension the scheduled services operations.

These factors, according to Aero, are both internal and external environmental factors that have made it difficult for it to continue its scheduled services.

It stated that during the period in review, Aero witnessed epileptic operations and services to the external public that were caused by non-alignment of fundamental issue of the business, which in some cases had been frustrating and embarrassing to all parties including staff, customers and indeed all stakeholders.

As part of its resolve to ensure the airline survived unlike most other carriers that experienced short life span in the country, AMCON had appointed Mr. Adeniyi Adegbomire SAN as Receiver Manager in February 6, 2016, with the aim of turning the airline around.

Since AMCON’s intervention in Aero Contractors in 2011, it had provided support for the airline to meet working capital requirements and fleet expansion.

These were to ensure the airline remains a going concern providing services to various clients and the general public.

But the airline noted that unfortunately, the operating environment within and outside the Aero had hindered any possible progress especially in the last six months when the naira depreciated against the dollar thus making it impossible for the airline to achieve its operational targets.

It started that with these realities coupled with protracted engagements with all relevant stakeholders, the management strenuously reviewed and assessed options and opportunities on ensuring viability, safety and sustainability of operations during the period with a lot of sacrifices.

The airline said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services.

“The implication of the suspension of scheduled services operations extends to all staffs directly and indirectly involved in providing services as they are effectively to proceed on indefinite leave of absence during the period of non-services.

It added, “We are aware of the impact this will have on our staff and our highly esteemed customers, hence we have initiated moves to ensure that we are able to return back to operations within the shortest possible time, offering reliable, safe and secure operations, which the airline is known for.”

370 kilos of cocaine found at Coca-Cola factory

A report on Wednesday in Paris said 370 kilogrammes of cocaine worth 55.6 million dollars street value was found at the Coca-Cola factory plant in southern France. The report also said that Coca-Cola might have taken the cocaine out of its fizzy brew over a century ago. It stated that the cocaine was discovered last Friday in a container delivered from an orange juice supplier in Costa Rica to a Coca-Cola location in Signes, north of Toulon. It noted that the multinational beverage company is best known for the popular carbonated drink that shares its name.

It confirmed that Coca-Cola was originally intended as a patent medicine and contained small amounts of cocaine as stimulant until the early 20th century. Meanwhile, Jean-Denis Malgras, the Head of the plant, had described the discovery as a “very nasty surprise.” However, security officials said that initial investigations had shown that no Coca-Cola employee was knowingly involved in the drug delivery.

Anambra Youths Beat Catholic Priest To Coma

A tragic incident took place yesterday as Youths of Obubo community in Anambra State attacked a Priest, Rev. Father Fidelis Ifeanyichukwu Ugozo of the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Ugbenu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, beating him to a state of coma.
The rampaging youths led by their leader, Gabriel Ikegbunam are said to be Idol worshipers.

According to Anambra Broadcasting Service, (ABS),the priest and some of his followers were carrying out a rosary procession around some of the villages when they were stopped by one of the youth leaders in the village, Gabriel Ikegbunam, who felt the clergy man and his followers were out to burn down their deity.

Mr. Ikegbunem insisted that they will not enter his village, and when they overpowered him, he started making contacts, calling some youths from the village to attack the priest and others who were mainly women and children.

The Catholic priest who was severely beaten and stabbed in the face was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ebenebe after the attack but was later transferred to St. Joseph’s hospital, Adazi Ani by the Ebenebe Deanery Chaplain.

A former catechist at St. Raphael’s parish Ugbenu, Cletus Nwankwo, said Obubo village is known
for adulterous acts, adding that the youths suspected that the Rosary procession was aimed at destroying their deity shrine.

“They moved from Agueke village to Obiagu and decided to branch at Obubo before Ikegbunam blocked them and in the process, he called some of them and told them that Catholics are coming to burn their shrine. Soon the youths trooped out, wielding dangerous weapons such as axe, gun and machetes.

“They grabbed the Blessed Sacrament from our Parish Priest, hit it on the floor and used the Monstrance to hit our Parish priest on his hand before stabbing him on the face and other parts of the body” he said.

The Traditional ruler of Ugbenu town, Igwe Lawrence Egwuonu, while speaking to newsmen said his wife, Lolo Egwuonwu was also beaten by the youths, stating that Gabriel Ikegbunam, Israel Egwu and two others stormed his palace before the incident occurred to complain that their shrine and other sacred symbols were burnt by Christians.

“After investigation, I discovered that they were all liars. None of their shrines were burnt and I can defend it anywhere.

“It was Ikegbunam that incited others to attack the priest and other Christians.

“Their greatest mistake was touching the priest and destroying the Blessed Sacrament. It is a sacrilege and they will pay for it,” he said.

Two amongst the rampaging youths, Anthony Anigbogu and Humphrey Ekwenye, have been reprimanded and are currently in the custody of the State CID, Awka, while other accomplices are still at large.

Chris Brown freed after standoff with LA police

Chris Brown

An attorney for Chris Brown said Wednesday that the singer has been released from custody, following a bizarre standoff at his home with police after a woman alleged that he pointed a gun at her. Police arrested Brown on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, after an hours-long standoff on Tuesday.

He was freed on $250,000 bail at 11:19 pm local time (0619 GMT Wednesday), according to Los Angeles County jail records. “Chris is out and well,” Brown’s attorney Mark Geragos tweeted a short time later.

“The allegations against him are demonstrably false.” The Los Angeles Police Department earlier said that officers from the homicide and robbery division, which deals with celebrity cases, headed to Brown’s palatial home after the woman called for help at 3:11 am on Tuesday. Brown, 27, took to social media to deny wrongdoing, daring police to get a search warrant to enter his home in a series of videos posted on Instagram. “Barricaded myself in my house,” the pop star said in the online post. “I’m not coming out — for what?” said Brown, in a video post broadcast on US television and shared countless times online. “When you all get the warrant or whatever you need, you’re gonna walk right up in here and see nothing, you idiots,” Brown says on Instagram. After the lengthy standoff, police by early afternoon had obtained a search warrant and entered the singer’s home. Baylee Curran, who was crowned Miss California Regional in a beauty pageant this year, identified herself as the caller as she also took to Instagram. She also spoke to the Los Angeles Times, saying she and a friend went into a hot tub at Brown’s house and that the singer became angry when she admired the jewelry of a member of his entourage. She said she fled in fear, then refused to sign a nondisclosure agreement before she escaped from Brown’s house. The gossip website TMZ reported that Brown had thrown a duffle bag out of a window and that police had recovered a gun as well as drugs. Police have not confirmed the report. The R&B singer, who topped the US singles chart with “Run It!” and “Kiss Kiss,” has had years of run-ins with the law. Most notoriously, he was convicted of beating then-girlfriend Rihanna before the 2009 Grammy Awards, forcing the pop singer to miss the music industry’s annual gala. He is set to be arraigned in court on September 20. The incident comes with Brown scheduled later this week to open an international tour, with the first date scheduled for Curacao this Friday, and appearances planned in Japan at the end of next month.

Lagos – The Managing Director, Creat `ur` Agency, a modelling firm, Mr Tunde Afolabi, said that the entertainment industry could produce millions of jobs for youths. Afolabi stated this in an interview on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said that the industry, if well harnessed, would be one of the biggest employers of labour in the country because of its vast potential. According to him, there are potential job opportunities in modelling, beads and craft making, fashion design, styling and creativity. The director said that the sector was endowed with talented and gifted individuals capable of using their natural gifts to create jobs and to also earn a living. “If government can properly channel more funds to the industry, it will be the highest employer of labour and it will generate huge revenue, “ he said. Afolabi urged the Federal Government to assist in providing soft loans for practitioners to support their creativity. “Such loans will assist individuals in the industry to expand their businesses and come out with quality products. “It will also assist practitioners to obtain quality machines for mass production and also boost manpower. “Such a move would fetch the Federal and State Governments huge revenue, “ he said. Joe Hart: Man City & England keeper joins Torino on loan

Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart has signed for Italian side Torino on loan for the rest of the season.

The Football Association gave the 29-year-old permission to leave the England camp on Monday so he could travel to Italy for a medical.

"Signing Joe Hart is a source of great satisfaction," said a statement on Serie A side Torino's website.

Hart could make his debut in Torino's next game at Atalanta on 11 September.

Live - Transfer deadline day
All the completed transfers as they happen
The England number one has 63 caps for his country but had been told by new City manager Pep Guardiola that he was free to leave.

"I am convinced I can still learn a lot at Torino," said Hart, who will rejoin the England squad for Sunday's 2018 World Cup qualifying match in Slovakia.

Hart is yet to feature in the Premier League under Guardiola, who has signed Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, 33, from Barcelona.

Officials at City had vowed to help Hart "find the best solution" in order to keep his international place.

Phil McNulty's 10 deals to look out for
Who needs what on deadline day?
City are paying some of Hart's wages to allow him to move to Serie A for the season, though the amount is not known.

Torino are seventh in the Serie A table, with three points from the first two games of the season.

Former England full-back Tony Dorigo, who spent a year with Torino between August 1997 and October 1998, believes Hart can be a success at the club.

"I think Joe needs to get stuck in there with the right attitude, learn the language and just enjoy the experience," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

City are also set to loan out midfielder Samir Nasri and defender Eliaquim Mangala - to Sevilla and Valencia respectively.

Mangala has travelled to Valencia to agree a deal with the La Liga club.

The 25-year-old France international had a number of options after being told he could find another club.

City paid Porto £32m for the player in 2014.

Zuckerberg announced the visit via his personal Facebook page, saying he was ready to interact with Nigerian innovators and learn about their business ideas.

Zuckerberg wrote on his wall: “Next stop: Lagos! This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can.”

Zuckerberg yesterday visited Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB), a multi- technological ecosystem based in Yaba, Lagos Mainland. He interacted with children on summer coding camp.

He wrote: “Our first stop is the Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps. I’m looking forward to meeting more people here!”

Zuckerberg’s visit generated online buzz and excitement among technology-savvy youths, who expressed views that the billionaire’s visit would give the nation’s youth entrepreneurship market a facelift.

Last night, the Facebook founder met with Ms Rosemary Njoku, initiator of Facebook Express Wi-Fi stand in Lagos.

Catholic priest faces fresh charge over 10-yr-old girl’s rape

ABUJA—The Federal Capital Territory Police Command, yesterday, said it had concluded plans to dock a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Anthony Ochigbo, before an Abuja High Court over allegation that he raped a 10-year-old girl. The Officer-in-Charge of Legal Matters at the Command, Mr. James Idachaba, made the disclosure after he applied and withdrew an initial one-count rape charge Police entered against the priest before an Abuja Upper Area Court at Gudu. The Upper Area court judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, had on Monday, remanded Rev. Ochigbo in prison custody, even as he adjourned ruling on the defendant’s application for bail. However, at the resumed sitting, the prosecuting counsel, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Idachaba, persuaded the Upper Area Court judge to hands off the matter for a higher court to take over the trial. Idachaba, who anchored his application on Section 106 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, stressed that the Upper Area Court was bereft of the requisite jurisdiction to handle the case. The prosecution told the court that it was the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), that okayed the transfer of the matter to a higher court. Despite objection by the defence counsel, Mr. Godwin Chukwukere, the court acceded to the withdrawal request. The judge said he had no option than to strike out the initial First Information Report before him and discharge the defendant. Nevertheless, the priest is still in police detention awaiting his arraignment before the high court.

Arsenal's Jack Wilshere poised for transfer to Crystal Palace on loan after TWENTY-TWO offers in one day

Alan Pardew is hoping to complete a deal to take Jack Wilshere to Crystal Palace on a season-long loan.

Arsenal midfielder Wilshere has already held talks with Palace boss Alan Pardew, who is in pole position to sign the England international.

The 24-year-old had a staggering 22 offers from clubs at home and abroad after we revealed that the Gunners were prepared to loan him out.

Watford, West Brom and Bournemouth all made approaches on Tuesday, Roma’s sporting director Franco Baldini tried to take him to Italy and Spanish side Valencia are also keen.

Wilshere, who has two years left on his current contract, wants to move to get regular football after being axed from the England squad.
Palace appeals as it is still in London, near his family and children, while his dad Andy also believes a move to Selhurst Park would offer a fresh start.

Arsenal do want a sizeable loan fee and for clubs to meet his £80,000-a-week wages, but Palace — who have signed Liverpool's Christian Benteke, fellow striker Loic Remy from Chelsea and Newcastle's England winger Andros Townsend this summer — are confident of getting a deal done.

Barcelona legend Xavi believes Wilshere could benefit from a loan move to try to revive a career which has been blighted by injuries.

Xavi said: ”A loan move can be a good move for him. He needs to be playing,
he needs to build up his fitness, and if he can do that I am sure he will still have a big career at Arsenal.
”It's important that he is loaned to a club that try and play football.

"Arsenal have a philosophy similar to Barcelona's in their approach to the game - and he should be loaned to a club who want to keep the ball and share that vision.
"He is a young player still, and if he can put the injuries behind him there is no reason why he still can't be one of the best midfield players in Europe.”

It comes as Arsenal completed a £17m deal for Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez and confirmed the £25m-plus deal for Valencia’s Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi.
Arsenal offered Gnabry a new contract to stay, but Bremen have offered a big fee and sell-on clauses which helped offset the spending on Perez and Mustafi.
Arsenal had offers from the Premier League and abroad but want the 21-year-old to play as a centre-back, and Boro suits them in that regard.

Akwa Ibom Women To Protest Unclad, So That God Will Punish FG

We’ll protest Unclad to summon wrath of gods against FG, gas company over oil spillage – A’Ibom women

NSIT IBOM- WOMEN of Obotim Nsit community, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa-Ibom State have vowed to protest Unclad to summon the wrath of the gods against government and a gas company whose pipeline was blown up in the community by the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, July 24, for allegedly abandoning them to their fate after the destructive incident.

They claimed that the explosion caused extensive damage to all the houses in the village besides ruining their farmlands and other means of livelihood, only for the company, working for the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, which constructed the pipeline, to simply evacuate its equipment after the incident and leave.

However, NDA, penultimate week, declared an unannounced ceasefire following the appeal by monarchs, leaders and stakeholders of the Niger Delta coastal states on militants to sheathe their swords.

In response to an earlier inquiry on the complaints by communities about the effects of their attacks on the environment, spokesperson of the militant group, self-styled Brig Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, empathized with the people, but said it was an unavoidable corollary they would have to bear in the spirit of the struggle to liberate them.

2000 houses under threat

Head of the host community, where the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, gas pipeline control valve is located, Eteidung Okon Aaron Ukpong, told Niger Delta Voice, NDV, that the explosion destroyed nearly 2000 houses in the community.

Besides shattering the villagers’ means of livelihood, he said the people have become susceptible to untold danger and insecurity, as their homes now stand on shaky foundations with the roofing sheets weakened by harmful chemical effects of the gas emissions.

Our anger against gas firm, govt- Nkanta, women leader

Women Leader of the community, Mrs. Dorothy Nkanta, who corroborated the claims of the village head, was aghast at the alleged lack of concern of their plight showed by government and Seven Energy Gas Company before and after the explosion.

Stressing that the explosion destroyed their cassava farms, oil palm and other economic trees, Nkanta lamented: “Unfortunately, Seven Energy came and evacuated their equipment from the site not minding the losses the community have recorded.

“That means that they do not care about the disaster they have brought to us after taking our land to lay their pipeline and locate their control valve. They are not bothered about the health hazards and general calamity the emissions from their pipeline have brought to our land.

“What have they said is our offence for giving our land out for them to do business? Is this the kind of reward we should receive from government and the gas company for the good thing we did for them”?

Stripped protest

Her words: “But I want to warn that they should not provoke us to go Unclad on the streets for them else, it will not be well with them.

“We need compensation for the losses we have recorded as a result of that gas pipeline explosion and for the degradation of our land since that gas pipeline control valve was installed at the Asang Community High School, else, we will go Unclad on the streets to provoke the gods of our land to action against these people, who have suddenly turned our enemies.”

Problem started since 2008

The village head, Ukpong, added: “The people’s worry is that while they were all along trying to contend with the health hazards they were subjected to by the chemical emissions from the gas pipeline since it was installed in 2008, the explosion of July 24, 2016 has come to worsen things for them by completely destroying their means of livelihood and shelter, even as the state and federal governments and Seven Energy Gas Company managing the pipeline have showed no concern for the plight of the people.”

Before the explosion, he said since 2008 when the company laid the pipeline, the people no longer record good yields from their farm lands due to harmful chemical discharges from the pipelines into the soil.

He confirmed that Seven Energy Gas Company, the outfit in-charge of the gas pipeline for the NNPC, indeed, came to evacuate its equipment after the explosion not minding the havoc the explosion had caused the community in terms of devastation of farmlands, lives and people’s houses.

“We thought initially that the laying of the gas pipeline control valve at Asang was a blessing, only for it to become a curse to the community,.

“Since 2008 that the gas pipeline control valve was located at Asang Community High School, Obotim Nsit, our people started having health challenges due to harmful chemical emissions from the pipeline just as our sources of drinking water got destroyed.

“Besides, our farmlands have become degraded and no longer record good yields as a result of harmful chemical spills on the land. Even the roofs on our houses no longer last beyond one year because of leakages caused by harmful effect of chemicals from the gas pipeline.

“And now, the explosion, which occurred on July 24, 2016, has come to cause complete destruction of our farms, our houses and investments and the attitude of government towards us after we recorded the magnitude of losses, is an indication that the location of the gas pipeline control valve and the gas pipeline passing through our community generally, is a curse rather than a blessing”, the Eteidung insisted.

He, therefore, urged both the state and federal governments to send their agencies to assess the magnitude of distress the pipeline explosion has brought to the people of the community with a view to compensating them.

Funds diversion: Orubebe’s arraignment stalled again

The absence of former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, stalled his arraignment for alleged involvement in the diversion of about N2.3 billion public funds on Tuesday.

Orubebe, Oludare Lawrence Alaba (an Assistant Director, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs), Ephraim Tewolde Zeri (Director of Contracts in Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nigeria Limited and the company are listed in the six-count charge marked: CR/265/2016, filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

They are accused of diverting the N2.3 billion meant for the compensation of property owners to be affected by the Federal Government’s dualization project of Section IV of the East West Road.

This is the second time Orubebe and others’ arraignment will be shifted to a later date.

They were initially scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on August 18.

It was shifted to August 30 when prosecution lawyer, Osuobeni Akponimisingha told the court that the ICPC was yet to effect service of the charge on all defendants.

Akponimisingha told the court again on Tuesday that two of the defendants – Alaba and Zeri – were in court.

He noted that Orubebe was not in court despite the fact he had been properly served with the necessary court documents.

Orubebe’s lawyer, F. Zimuan, told the court that his client was absent in court because he is indisposed.

“His (Orubebe’s) absence is not deliberate. He suddenly took ill. He had domestic accident, which affected his ankle and wrist,” Zimuan said.

He said the development had cumulative effect on his hypertensive client, who had since been rushed to the hospital.

How dad lured me into acting –Sola Kosoko

Starting out in 1987 as a kid actor in a movie entitled, Omo Orukan, Sola Kosoko Abina, never knew she could become this popular. She was off and on the screen until her father, veteran actor, Jide Kosoko persuaded her otherwise. She listened to dad and later took a plunge that has ended well for her.
Today, the Olabisi Onabanjo University graduate of Sociology has no regret choosing acting as a career. In this interview, she narrates how her father lured her into Nollywood.

What have you been up to lately?
I have been doing my work. I have never stopped acting except when I went to have my baby and that was about two years ago. My daughter is two years old now.

What movie are you working on at the moment?
I produced a movie last year, with a tentative title, ‘Ese Ni’ (It’s A Sin). I called the title tentative because I’m thinking of changing it. I just finished working on the movie; it will be shown at LTV 8 during the Ileya festival.

What inspired the story line of ‘Ese Ni’
Actually, when I want to write a story, I just sit and think deeply. I remember a friend who narrated to me her ordeal and that of her sister; the two sisters actually dated the same guy at the same time and they didn’t know. But when they discovered, they felt bad and cut off the guy immediately. To me, it’s an abomination. So, I decided to work on the story to entertain and educate my fans.

Who are the cast members of the movie?
Bidemi Kosoko and I actually played the roles of the two sisters. Other cast members include my father, Prince Jide Kosoko, Jaye Kuti, Femi Adebayo, Afeez Eniola, and Tomiwa Olajogun. My elder brother, Tunde Kosoko, directed the movie.

How have you been copying with marriage and acting, do you stay with your husband?
Of course we stay together. I just spoke with him on the phone now. My husband is based here in Nigeria. He works in a telecommunication company as an architect. I just came back from abroad where I had gone to deliver my baby. So, back to the question of how I have been coping with marriage and acting, I would say it’s been God all the way. If I say it’s been easy, that means I’m not being truthful to myself. Combining marriage, acting and motherhood is very tasking, but the Lord has always been my strength.

How did you meet your husband?
The truth of the matter is that I have known my husband even before I became this famous. He has been my very close friend since I was in secondary school but we never dated, he was always there supporting me. He’s very good at calculations and I’m not that good, so he was always helpful. Even when I got admission into the higher institution, he never turned back; he supported me academically and financially. We met shortly before my 20th birthday in 1999, but I told him I wasn’t ready for a relationship.

A lot of younger actresses look up to you, what do you have to tell them?
My advice is always that if you want to be great in life, take one step after the other. There is no shortcut to success. In my own case, I would say I’m lucky because my father had already created the platform for me. He was even the one that lured me into acting. And ever since then, I have been working so hard to attain this status that I am. So, the up and coming actresses should remain focused, they should not give room to any distraction. And of course, prayer is key; they should be very prayerful. Surely, the sky is their limit.

Professor Johnbull: Danja in love tango

Viewers of popular TV comedy drama series, Professor Johnbull, sponsored by grand master of data, Globacom, had more than enough fun on Tuesday night when the sixth episode entitled, Half Bread and Puff-puff came on air on NTA network, NTA International (Channel 251 on DSTV) and Startimes.
The thought-provoking episode, which left many reeling with laughter while soaking in the message, highlighted the need for ladies in Nigeria to be cautious and wise when making decisions on dating and marriage partners.
The story revolves around the trio of Europe-based lover boy, Malik (Sanni Danja), Ufoma acted by Bimbo Akintola and Bidemi Kosoko (Jumoke) as they find themselves in a love tango due to Malik’s marriage proposals to both Ufoma and Jumoke.
Malik had met stunning beauty, Ufoma, while driving around and decides to woo her but meets an unfriendly lady who is more interested in selling her yams. All attempts by Malik proved abortive as Ufoma remains unperturbed and ends up telling Malik how a Europe-based Nigerian impregnated her and disappeared into thin air many years back.
They are on this issue when Jumoke and her lover boy, Flash, stroll in. Jumoke immediately wades into the matter and succeeds in pulling Malik away. But instead of helping him on the Ufoma issue, she decides to ‘market herself ‘and Malik who is very desperate, agrees to marry her immediately to the surprise and consternation of Ufoma who watches the ensuing drama in awe. Flash attempts without success to dissuade Jumoke from joining Malik in his car. His attempt meets Jumoke’s stiff resistance.
The ‘new couple’ later surface at Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso)’s Nkwobi joint where Olaniyi congratulates them and advises couples to always court for long time before marriage. He asks how long Jumoke had known Malik and she says five years, which shocks Malik who whispers to her “that’s a lie”.
Flash appears immediately and in annoyance asks Jumoke what she is doing, to which she answers sarcastically “exam” and leaves the joint immediately with Malik only to meet Ufoma on the way and a fight ensued. The appearance of Professor Johnbull outside the joint calms frayed nerves and he intervenes by summoning all of them to his house.
It is, however, at Professor’s house that the love quagmire unravels as Madam Christina (Patience Ozokwor)‘s arrival with her daughter, whose testimony also corroborates the story of escapades of overseas lovers, finally nails Malik.
Slippery Malik had proposed to Ufoma and Jumoke within one hour. The two ladies, joined by Mama G’s daughter, subsequently descend on Malik, beating him silly.
Professor Johnbull, in his characteristic candid manner, condemns the attitude of Casanovas like Malik. He advises ladies to be wise in dating and marrying overseas lovers.

Why I’m still single –Ruggedman, rapper

Sensational rapper, Michael Stephens popularly known as Ruggedman, has opened up to Entertainer on the reason he has remained single over the years. Find out in this interview.

What is Ruggedman up to lately?
Yeah! I released a song last week featuring 9ice. People never expected it. It really came as a surprise because I didn’t do the ‘coming soon’ announcement. I just dropped the song and my strategy is working in promoting the song. Everybody was shocked when it dropped. The song is titled, Religion. It’s just like what we did for the Nigerian music some years ago with the song, Ruggedy Baba. Then, we preached a particular ‎gospel and it became a trend. We are doing the same thing this time with this song, Religion. In the song, 9ice and I made sure we didn’t talk about the issue we had, because to me, I have let bygone be bygone.
You had issues with 9ice, why then did you feature him in this new song?
9ice has apologised for everything that happened, so I didn’t see anything wrong in featuring him in my song. He is still my friend; I had known him for a long time. So, I asked him if he would like to do this song with me, he agreed and that was it.
Don’t you think people would see it like some tactics to hype the song, a reconciliation song between you two?
This is not the first time we had done songs together, although, this is the first one since the controversy. We have done a song before and it was a hit. So, I believe we can do it again not necessarily because of the drama.
I have done songs with Eedris (Abdukareem) too and it was a hit. It wasn’t because we wanted to use the drama to sell the music; it’s just part of life. Though, whatever we do, people would still assume all sorts. Even if we do a song and the title is Love and Peace, people would still criticize and say a whole lot.
Freeze was one of those who threw shades at you over the song; did you have issues with him?
(Laughs) No! Not at all. Lots of things happen in life. People will insult you, talk about you and point accusing fingers at you, but how you react about it makes you who you are. If you don’t react, fine. That’s why I chose to remain silent. It’s not everything that I should respond to. But Freeze is my friend, I don’t take whatever he said or wrote to heart. Don’t worry I’ll catch him and deal with him too, make him no worry (laughs).
Have you had any issue with him before now?
No! Everybody is doing his own thing to get his or her own business moving and gathering traffic on social media. Just like people always insult Linda Ikeji and calling her all sorts of names, but she’s making her money and building her empire.
So, I am taking the positives out of the whole shades and criticisms and ignoring the rest. It has been working for me in a positive way. People have been asking me about issues with Freeze, and journalists like you are also asking me the same question. So you see, it’s all helping me promote the song in a way.
Since 9ice apologised, how has your relationship with him been?
We have been friends since then. But hey, you don’t expect everything to go back to normal in a day. Because we are human, so many things can’t be forgotten. But now, we talk, hang out, gist and we have even worked together on a song, which is a good point!
Why is Ruggedman still single?
Marriage will happen when it will happen. Marriage is not a fashion statement that everybody wants to join the trend. You don’t get married because people are getting married or get married because people asked you to do so, you get married when you are very ready to get married. I keep saying parents should not force their children to get married because it’s part of what causes domestic violence in homes of nowadays.
Are you in support of what Flavour said about marriage slowing down the progress of artistes?
That’s Flavour not Ruggedman. I don’t know about that one, but I know I’ll get married when the right time comes. If you do things right, marriage won’t be a barrier to your music or whatever you are doing. I will not lie to you, I know a lot of artistes that got married and it slowed down their career so much. But there are those who got married and are still doing their thing. It’s all left to you and how you manage your marriage and career. I’ll always advice that one should marry his or her best friend; it helps a lot.
So, you are already dating your best friend and planning to get married?
(Laughs) That’s not what I said. I didn’t say that. I just gave an advice.
Are you in a relationship?
I don’t want to talk about my private life. I want it to remain private.
Are you scared of talking about it or scared of commitment?
No! Marriage is nothing one should be scared about. It should only be done at the right time. Some people, when  they see their soul mates, they just can’t wait to get married to them. That’s how it should be, but when you are having second thoughts, then calm down, check yourself and make sure you are doing the right thing.
What’s Ruggedman’s ideal woman?
Everybody can paint a picture of their ideal woman, but nobody knows who he would fall in love with.
Are you in love right now?
Yes! I’m in love with Rihanna.
But Don Jazzy is also in love with her…
(Cuts in) Who’s Don Jazzy? He better stays clear, if I catch him anywhere near my Rihanna; he will not like it (laughs).
What’s your take on the present government?
I really need them to tell Nigerians what’s going on because the economy is not working for a lot of us and it’s getting worse. The exchange rate is not friendly at all.
As an artiste, how has it affected you?
There are no more shows like we used to have. Show promoters are also affected and this in turn affects the artistes.
What’s up with your clothing line?
I have a clothing line called ‘20th September Wears’; that’s my birthday. I want to immortalize my birthday, that’s why I chose that name. It’s all about urban wears like face caps, T-shirts, jackets, hoodies, and also fancy water bottles. Next month, I am going to unveil new designers. It is going to be an annual thing, new products every year. I want to be the next Versace or D&G; I mean one of the best designers people can associate with.

Okra contains potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. It’s low in calories and has high dietary fiber content.
Incidences of diabetes diagnoses are only increasing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The verdict is out on whether okra can be used successfully as a direct diabetes treatment. However, the okra plant does have many proven health benefits. Read on to see if okra could be a viable part of your diabetes treatment plan.

Studies on Okra and Diabetes.
Medical research on okra for diabetes management is still in early stages. Okra Benefit #1: Dietary Fiber.
Okra is high in fiber. Eight medium-sized pods are estimated to contain 3 grams of fiber. This bulk fiber quality has several benefits. It helps digestion, cuts hunger cravings, and keeps those who eat it fuller for longer. Foods that are high in fiber content are an important part of dietary treatment options for diabetes. Increased dietary fiber intake has been shown to promote better glycemic control and improve insulin sensitivity.

Okra Benefit #2: Anti-Stress Effects
There is evidence that the seed extracts of okra have an antioxidant, anti-stress effect in the bloodstream of mice. Managing stress levels is an important part of managing diabetes. Long-term, high stress levels can cause blood sugar levels to spike. Mental health should be a part of any diabetes treatment plan, and using okra and its derivative seeds can be a part of that plan. Okra Benefit #3: Helps Lower Cholesterol
Okra has been found to lower cholesterol levels in diabetic lab mice. Foods with high fiber content and antioxidant qualities are recommended for those with diabetes because they lower cholesterol. The American Heart Association points out that people with diabetes are more likely to have unhealthy cholesterol levels. When high cholesterol levels are combined with diabetes, the outlook is not good. That’s why it’s so critical to make sure that your diet has healthy cholesterol levels.

Okra Benefit #4: Anti-Fatigue Benefit
One study indicates that recovery times and “fatigue levels” can be improved by use of the okra plant. By including okra in your diet along with a healthy exercise routine, you may be able to work out for longer and recover more quickly from your exercise. Cardiovascular activity is an essential part of preventing and treating diabetes. This means that the okra plant may contribute to a more active lifestyle. Govt’ll improve ease of doing business, says Osinbajo

The Federal Government is putting things in place to move Nigeria from a ranking of 169 out of 189 countries in the World Bank ease of doing business to at least 20 spaces in the coming ranking.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo who stated this yesterday in Abuja, said the Federal Government is focused on making it easier to do business in Nigeria.

Osinbajo made the statement in Abuja at the the International Mining Investment Conference/Exhibition on Nigeria with Connecting the Global Mining Industry to the Opportunities of the Solid Minerals Sector in Nigeria as theme.

Represented by the Special Adviser, Economic Office, Adeyemi Dipeolu, the Vice President said: “We are seeking to cooperate with our partners in the solid minerals sector to come up with a strategy for ensuring that it plays it’s desired role as a major economic sector in Nigeria.

“Budgetary provisions for the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development allotment this year is far larger than the allocation that the ministry has had in the past five years.
“Let me assure local and foreign investors that in our quest to grow this sector,  the Federal Government is fully focused on making it easier to do business in Nigeria. As a metrix, we are planning and taking actions already on trying to move Nigeria from a ranking of 169 out of 189 countries in the World Bank ease of doing business to at least 20 spaces better in the coming ranking, we do hope by this gesture, governments efforts will be reciprocated by the respect for the rule of law and commitment to promoting the development of this country including the payment of taxes as required.”

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi said the country can generate N5 trillion yearly from mining and exporting of its vast minerals deposits with multiplier effects on job creation, state development and social infrastructure.

He added that last year, the solid minerals sector contributed 0.33 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country and the sector hopes to contribute between five and seven per cent over the next 10 to 15 years.

“Today, based on current data, Nigeria’s solid minerals sector only makes up about 0.34 per cent of GDP; while that is significant, it is much smaller than its true potential as the vast majority of our mining assets have yet to be exploited.

“According to one of the major stakeholders in the solid minerals sector, the Association of Metal Exporters of Nigeria, we can generate at least N5 trillion annually from mining and exporting of its vast solid mineral deposits, with several multiplier effects on job creation, state development and social infrastructure that could position the solid minerals sector as the main catalyst for national development.

“Ancillary requirements for the proper functioning of the minerals and mining ecosystem such as infrastructure – e.g. railroad, competitive financing systems, mine and asset security, and related support services – are missing. We need changes in legislation – e.g. the passage of an amendment to the Nigeria Railways Corporation Act to break NRC’s monopoly and enable miners to set up private transport networks to move bulk minerals around the country for processing.
