35 years after: How OOUTH produced Nigeria’s best medical graduate

WHAT a coincidence for the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State after being awarded best state university in Nigeria, also produced arguably the best medical graduate in the country through the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences of Olabisi Onabanjo University .

OOU, owned by the Ogun State Government has emerged as the best state university in Nigeria for the year 2016. The award, which was presented by the Institute for Governance, Research, Leaderships and Technology, acknowledged the school’s standard and academic excellence was first among equals.

Vanguard also learned that two of its Law graduates bagged first class degrees at the 2016 Bar Examinations at the Nigeria Bar Final Examinations. It was further learnt that the Faculty of Law of the University has been outstanding in the final bar examinations over the years.

Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that in the annals of the OOU Teaching Hospital which was established as one of the foundation colleges and faculties in 1982, no student had ever recorded such an outstanding performance.

Outstanding performance The management announced a-29-year-old Dr Saheed Alabi as the overall best student having secured distinction in seven medical-related courses out of the 10 courses offered.

Further findings have also shown that, Dr. Alabi who was fondly called Chromo by his colleagues arguably emerged as the best Nigerian medical graduate produced by the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital this year. According to the management, Dr . Alabi broke the protocol as he scored distinction in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, paediatrics, medicine and surgery.

Announcing the rare performance, the former Ogun State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Olusegun Jagun, who anchored the programme said, Dr. Alabi succeeded in breaking the protocol which has never happened in the annals of the OOUTH since it was created 35 years ago. Dr. Jagun’s position was corroborated by President OOU Medical Students Association, Adesina Oluwafemi, who called him ‘world best.’ Adesina who presented a plaque to the ‘world best’ was also joined by National Secretary, Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences Medical Alumni Association to present a prize of the best paediatrician in memory of late Dr. Olabisi Owoeye. This rare feat prompted the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye to launch an education foundation in his daughter’s name, Ajoke Ipaye, as he announced that annually he will be giving the overall best student, a sum of N100,000 while best student in community health will take N50,000 . Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Saburi Adesanya at the induction ceremony held at OOUTH where 55 medical students were inducted as doctors, his deputy, Dr. Ebunoluwa Oduwole said, their medical doctors have been rated as best in the world. Meanwhile, the vice chancellor, while addressing newsmen on the coming convocation disclosed that the Senate has agreed to confer a special degree award on the overall best student following an unprecedented brilliant performance.

Man Ejaculates On A Lady At Diamond Bank, Nnewi, Anambra While On A Queue

A lady has revealed how a man ejaculated on her, today, while standing on a queue inside a bank in Nnewi area of Anambra State. According to her, after the guy who was close to her released the hot fluid on her leg, she gave him some hot slaps and was restrained by security operatives who prevented her from descending further on him.

Read what she shared on Instagram

I went to Diamond bank (Nnewi) today and went to their customer service to lay a complaint but the crowd at the spot was much so I stood in one of the queues there, there was this guy (via pix) behind me I noticed he was somehow resting on me so I moved a little and he moved with me, I noticed something suspicious so I looked back I saw him crossed both of his hands covered with a paper down his waist....

I kept mute and was busy with my phone I noticed something behind me again I turned and saw him with his hands at the same position so all of a sudden I felt something hot dripped on my leg to my outmost surprise it was a sperm I turned gat hold of him and gave him some hot slaps I know he has never received in his life before.... if not for the securities that intervene like seriously he won't live to remember a day like this.

We transfer victims’ funds with their phones —Suspect

A suspected, David Lucky, who is one of the three persons arrested by the  operatives of Edo State Police Command, has opened up on how he and members of his gang transferred money from their victims’ accounts to their own accounts, using their victims’ phones.

Lucky told Southern City News that the sum N210, 000 was transferred from the accounts of three of their victims on the eve of the New Year through the code of a popular commercial bank.

He said, “We transferred money from people’s account. We used to work for a telecoms company. When we see people with big phones, we told them that they could watch satellite TV stations on their phones. We also offered to help them with their subscription.

“Through that process, we also transferred money from people’s accounts. We transferred N100, 000 each from the accounts of two individuals and N10, 000 from another account. We did it on the eve of the New Year.”

The 19-year-old suspect said one of their victims alerted the police when she discovered a deduction in her account and raised the alarm.

The suspect said, “The person from whose account we transferred N100, 000 saw us when we were going home and held my friend, who transferred the money and demanded his money.

“From there, we were arrested and taken to New Benin. I regret everything. My dad is late but my mum was fed up with me because of what I did.”

Lucky and two others were arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly engaging in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities in Benin metropolis.

They were said to have been arrested at Upper Mission Road in Oredo Local Government Area of the state, after allegedly defrauding a woman around New Benin.

Lucky and other suspects (each aged 19 years) identified as Louis Ogidamen and Theophilus Oko, had posed as registration agents for a telecoms company.

It was learnt that they offered to register the SIM cards of their victims.

They were also alleged to have offered to assist their victims to enable financial transactions on their mobile phones and in the process, transferred money from the victims’ accounts to their own account.

The Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspects were under investigation.

How Tinubu’s plane helped remove Jammeh

INDICATIONS have emerged that a plane belonging to the National Leader of All Progressives Congress ,APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was used to fly ex-Gambian President, Mr. Yahaya Jammeh out of the country.

Vanguard learnt that the gesture was in furtherance of the reconciliatory efforts of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, in the country where Jammeh’s refusal to relinquish power led to political crisis.

The VP-CBT Falcon jet, which had been with Guinean President, Alpa Conde for days, was stationed in Banjul to ferry Jammeh out of the country after 22 years in power.

Vanguard further gathered that Tinubu is a personal friend of President Conde.

Conde and Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz had spent much of Friday in Banjul persuading Jammeh to leave power. A BBC report on Saturday at 10.30 pm said  the plane had taken off for Guinea with Jammeh, his family and President Conde on board. The former Gambian leader was flown to Conakry where he would temporarily stay before leaving for Equatorial Guinea where he would live in exile. West African leaders did not agree to immunity for  Jammeh during negotiations that convinced Gambia’s longtime ruler to flee into exile, Senegal’s foreign minister said on Sunday. Jammeh, who is accused of serious rights violations, led his country for 22 years but refused to accept defeat in a December election. He flew out of the capital Banjul late on Saturday as a regional military force was poised to remove him.

South African Pastor 'Heals' Woman's 'Vagina Pimples' With His Shoe

Just when we thought we have seen it all...from South African pastors forcing members to eat snakes, spraying insecticide, drink Dettol all in the name of healing, another Man of God has added a new twist.

A video uploaded on the Facebook page of Pastor Zendile Andries November of Victorious Faith Ministries, South Africa, shows the pastor asking one of his female congregants whether she has “pimples” on her vagina.

When she said ‘yes’‚ a man removes November’s shoe and the pastor is seen handing it to the woman to place between her thighs. She then suddenly falls to the floor with the shoe between her thighs.

Another female member is then shown saying that she went to the bathroom with the woman and that she is now healed and will finally be able to sleep with her husband.
The woman is crying and there are cheers all round as the pastor tells her to rush home - meaning home to her husband as she is healed.

Protesting Delta women accuse herdsmen of raping three pregnant women

Women protesters from Ohorhor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday blocked the Ughelli-Patani section of the East-West road over the continued attacks on local farmers and indigenes of the community by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the area.

Women protesters from Ohorhor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday blocked the Ughelli-Patani section of the East-West road over the continued attacks on local farmers and indigenes of the community by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the area.

The protesters, who accused the herdsmen of allegedly raping three pregnant women and killing at least three persons in the last three weeks in the community, demanded that the herdsmen be evacuated from their farm lands to avoid further bloodshed.

Commuters traveling through the busy road were stranded for over 7 hours as the women defy several appeals from security agencies drafted to the area to leave the road while those who could not wait had to divert through the Ughelli-Asaba road to continue with their journey.

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the protest learnt that the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Benin, Edo State, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed, who was traveling to Bayelsa State for an assignment was also locked up in the process.

Mrs Umukoro added, “These Fulani herdsmen have rapped 3 pregnant women in our community. We are giving them four days to leave our community, else we would return to the road.”

Maritime Varsity: FG, Delta govts acquired land from impostors —Olu of Warri

WARRI—THE Olu  of Warri, Delta State, His Majesty, Ogiame Ikenwoli, has fingered the Federal and Delta State Governments for allegedly acquiring the site of the Nigerian Maritime University, NMU, in Warri South-West Local Government Area of the state, now a matter of disagreement between Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups, from impostors.

The Olu, who bared the Itsekiri position when he hosted visiting Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at his palace in Warri, demanded that the Federal Government appropriately acquire the NMU site from the Itsekiri people of Omadino, the lawful owners of Okerenghigho community, and not interlopers, who renamed it Okerenkoko.

There has been no love lost between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities in the state over the ownership of the location of the university. While the Ijaw claim that NMU is in Okerenkoko, a Gbaramatu-Ijaw land, the Itsekiri say it is in Okerenghigho, belonging to Omadino people of Itsekiri, which Ijaw acquired by force and renamed Okerenkoko.

Ogiame Ikenwoli, however, pointed out that he was not against the university, but wanted the site to be legally acquired from the true owners.

His words: “We, therefore, demand and appeal that the Federal Government should properly acquire the land for this university from Omadino the rightful and legal owners of Okerenghigho community and pay them their rightful due.

According to the monarch: “But we are miffed that the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in connivance with the then Delta State government, purportedly acquired the land from certain individuals who possessed neither historical nor legal title to the land, and reportedly even went ahead to pay compensation to these impostors. “Similarly, Abiteye and Uton-nanna, where there is the flow station, are illegally annexed as if they were part of Gbaramatu.

Security

“We plead with the Federal government, under President Muhammadu Buhari, to continue, and even intensify its constitutional responsibility of protection of lives and properties throughout the Niger Delta region. Criminality should be punished and not rewarded in any form, which has remained at the heart of the crisis, leading to an endless cycle of violence, reward, and then more violence and senseless destruction of oil facilities located mostly in Itsekiri areas, followed by brazen stealing of crude oil, accompanied by massive environmental pollution.“We enjoin Mr. President to, as a matter of urgency, establish military bases in selected locations in the Escravos and Benin River axis.”

VP mum on Olu’s claim

In his response, Osinbajo was silent on the issues raised by the monarch on the proper acquisition of the site of the university, a development that did not go well with the Itsekiri chiefs in the palace. However, before he visited the palace, he had spoken about the maritime university at Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom, where he told the people that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to take over the university    and that everything thing was being done in that regard, while the bill for its establishment had passed the second reading in the Senate. He said: “The President is an honest man, who has always had the passion to rule the country even when he was a military officer. I admit and agree with the Olu that I am an in-law to the Itsekiri nation by virtue of my marriage to my wife. “The Federal Government is in a haste to bring lasting solution to the unrest in the Niger Delta region so that peace can prevail. It is only in peace that the government can achieve success in its determination to bring rapid development to the area. “The Federal Government must complete the Lagos/Calabar rail project in no distant time and China is currently collaborating with the Federal Government to complete it. “Demand for oil has fallen as US, UK and other developed nations have seen other alternatives to fuel energy. China now has electrically-driven vehicles. “The cause of underdevelopment in Niger Delta is because of corruption of its leaders and politicians, up till now. The future is now, so the Federal Government should be encouraged to develop the area by stopping all forms of crime against oil facilities and federal government installations/institutions in Niger Delta.” EPZ project in Ogidigben Ogiame Ikenwoli said:  “This is a project very dear to us as a people. Ex-President Jonathan performed a colourful ground-breaking ceremony on this project at Ogidigben in 2015, and since then, nothing much has happened there. We appeal to Mr. President to use his good office to fast-track the commencement of this project, as this has huge potentials to create jobs and provide trickle-down economics for our people. “We understand that the Federal Government will not require to finance the entire project but only to provide the basic infrastructure and the enabling security backing for the international investors, who are eager and waiting to be so encouraged,” he added.

If you’re in Nollywood for prostitution, you won’t last, Ebube Nwagbo fires

                             Ebube Nwagbo

Curvy Nollywood actress turned producer, Ebube Nwagbo has been in the industry long enough to know her way around and to know what works and what doesn’t. The super-talented actress who is still basking in the euphoria of the success of her second self-produced movie ‘Not Enough’ in a chat with Potpourri  bared her mind on a number of issues besetting the industry.

One of the issues laid before the actress is the issue of some girls using the industry as a platform for prostitution. Ebube admitted that she knows nothing about the so-called naughty girls but admonished that whoever came into the industry to do so should as well accept failure.

Well, I don’t know about the naughty girls, everybody has her own side of the story, so I’m going to go with what I know. The industry is a big place, everybody comes from different places, different life backgrounds, and different stories. At the end of the day we don’t know who is here to do the right thing. If you’re here for the wrong reasons then you’re not going to last, and that’s just the truth. So, everybody I’ve come across is all here for a reason, so I don’t know about the prostitutes or the naughty girls invading Nollywood”, she said.

When asked how often she gets disturbed by guys or even stalked, the actress smiled and said it is something she has to live with everyday of her life.

“It comes with the job, I’m sure every actress out there will do this every day, not because they are pretty or because they are the curviest or whatever but once they see you on TV, they have this idea, so, it comes with job,” she opined.

Man Hit By Stroke After Raping Wife’s Niece At Agbarho In Delta State

A thirty-four-year old man, Kingsley Agbini, has developed stroke after he allegedly raped his wife’s niece, simply identified as Comfort in his house at Agbarho Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, DAILY POST is reporting.

Agbini who is still recuperating from his stroke has admitted to committing the offence, stating that he developed stroke after his escapades with Comfort on 12 December, 2016 was brought to the knowledge of his wife.

Agbini said, “It was a strong temptation that made me rape my wife’s sister. ”

Agbini whose wife, Grace has packed out of his house with his ten-month-old daughter as a result of the ugly incident is pleading for her return for settlement saying,” It was a temptation. I don’t understand.”

It was gathered that Kingsley Agbini had consistently raped the fifteen year old girl without the knowledge of his wife, Grace, a petty trader.

Trouble started for Kingsley Agbini after he last raped the girl on the 12th of December, 2016.

Pained by the ugly incident, Comfort informed some elderly people who later disclosed the development to her aunt, Grace at their No. 4 Andrew Obire Compound in Agbarho.

The incident made Grace who is now staying with a friend in Effurun to pack out of her hubby’s house.

She also demanded that the husband allow her pack her belongings but Kingsley insisted and allegedly threatened to kill her.

Grace, 28 years old reported the matter at Police Station in Agbarho today for fear of not being killed.

Grace who now has a ten months old baby, Michelle for her husband after their two year-old-marriage told the police that she delayed as a result of threats from Kingsley.

According to her,” Divorce is the best option for me now. How can I continue to stay with a man who cannot take care of my family. A man who threatens to even rape my mother if he has the opportunity. Let him give me my property and let me go. How can he rape my niece? She queried.

The Divisional Police Officer of Agbarho Police Station, CSP Onwumere blamed Grace and her niece Comfort for their delay in reporting the matter to the police just as he condemned the acts by Kingsley Agbini.

He also ordered for investigation into the matter, while a note has been issued for a medical tests to be conducted on the victim.

As at the time of filing this report, Kingsley Agbini is still cooling off his heels at the police station awaiting the outcome of the medical report on Comfort.

Breaking News!!! MMM Nigeria is Back

Popular Ponzi Scheme MMM has started its operation again.

We are now open!!! :-))

Dear members,

The holidays are over, and we''re now open. Just as promised. (You might have already noticed that we always stick to our promises. :-)) Actually, we promised to be open on January 14, but we''re open now, January 13, as you can see, which is a day earlier. (Well, I hope, the members of the System will forgive us for that. :-))

It''s related to the hysteria raised by the authorities and the mass media around MMM. By joining forces, they''ve managed to nearly give the members of the System a heart attack and have frightened them out of their wits. Poor souls don''t know what to expect. Will we open again or not? :-))

This is why we''ve decided, considering the situation, to reach out to the members, reassure and cheer them up by opening a little earlier. After all, Together We Can Change The World! :-))

Here we go.

1. As of this notice, MMM resumes its usual operation. You can now create your GH-requests.

2. However, it''s obvious that panic will reign in the first few days after the re-opening of the System. We’re likely to be deluged by GH-requests. Therefore, we''re going to make gradual paybacks by setting internal output limits. In other words, we will only pay a certain amount per day. Please, be prepared to wait for a couple of days. We are certain things will then calm down, and the System operation will return to normal.

We''re the ones setting the limits, so it''s completely under our control, and we are not expecting any emergencies in principle. Have no fear and go on about your business as usual. :-))

As the System is socially oriented, we will make paybacks to the poor and the economically disadvantaged in the first place: it means to the members with small PH amounts. The richer can wait. Moreover, we''ve warned you repeatedly to only provide help with amounts that are not critical for you. Therefore, if these large amounts are not critical for them (the richer), they can wait a few days. No need to be tragic about it. :-))

This is the way it''s going to be.

Hoping for your kind understanding, Sergey Mavrodi. We Change The World!

P. S. I''d like again to call on the authorities and the mass media: Please, leave us alone! Have mercy on people.

Beware of Bitcoin, Swisscoin, others, SEC warns Nigerians

The Securities and Exchange Commission, on Thursday said its attention had been drawn to radio advertisements and other modes of solicitations of the public to invest in crypto currencies such as Swisscoin, OneCoin, Bitcoin and such other virtual or digital currencies.

SEC, therefore, advised the public to exercise extreme caution with regard to digital (crypto currencies) as a vehicle of investments.

This warning was in consonance with similar warnings issued by capital market regulators and central banks across the world over the past few years, the regulator said in a post on its website.

Warning the public, the commission, thus, stressed that none of the persons, companies or entities promoting crypto currencies had been recognised or authorised by it or by other regulatory agencies in Nigeria to receive deposits from the public or to provide any investment or other financial services in or from Nigeria.

“The public should also be aware that any investment opportunities promoted by these persons, companies or entities are likely to be of a risky nature with a high risk of loss of money, while others may be outright fraudulent pyramid schemes,” the regulator noted.

The SEC added, “Given that these instruments and the persons, companies or entities that promote them have neither been authorised, nor any guidelines/regulations developed for them by any of the regulatory authorities in Nigeria, there is no protection available to users or investors in these virtual currencies from financial losses if the virtual currencies fail or the companies promoting them go out of business.

“The public and consumers of financial services are further advised that before making any investment or entering into any financial services transaction they should ascertain that the entity with whom the investment or transaction is being made is authorised by the commission or other financial services regulatory authority as applicable to provide such services.”

SEC had in August this year, raised the alarm over the activities of some online fraudsters, who operated an online investment scheme tagged ‘MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria.’

The fraudsters, SEC said then, carried out their illegitimate business via Nigeria.mmm.net portal/platform, and were promising investors a monthly investment return of 30 per cent.

It warned that the venture had no tangible business model, describing it as a Ponzi scheme, where returns would be paid from other people’s invested funds.

The commission, therefore, advised the general public to distance themselves from the online scheme, adding, “Please note that anyone that subscribes to this illegal activity does so at their own risk.”

The scheme in December last year, went under, leaving many Nigerians in pains following huge financial losses.

Kudirat Abiola: S-Court clears LASG to retry Al-Mustapha

ABUJA—The Supreme Court, yesterday, upheld the appeal by the Lagos State Government, against the discharge and acquittal of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha over the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.

Al-Mustapha was a former Chief Security Officer, CSO, to the late Military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

He was accused of complicity in the murder of Kudirat, a wife of the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election that was annulled by former President Ibrahim Babangida, late Chief Moshood Abiola.

Lagos State approached the apex court, seeking its permission to challenge a Court of Appeal judgment that freed Al-Mustapha on July 12, 2013. A seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court led by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, granted the re-opening of the case against Al-Mustapha. In a brief ruling, the apex court said it was minded to allow Lagos State to lodge its belated appeal, despite being out of time. Consequently, the Supreme Court gave Lagos State 30 days within which it should enter a notice of appeal against Al-Mustapha. The ruling followed an application that was moved on behalf of the state by Mrs. Osunsanya Oluwayemisi, a Senior State Counsel in the Lagos Ministry of Justice. Al-Mustapha’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Dauda, SAN, did not to oppose the application. The acting CJN stressed that going by the ruling, the time for Lagos to appeal against findings of the Court of Appeal on the celebrated murder case has been extended from July 12, 2013, when Mustapha was discharged, till yesterday. Though out of time, Lagos had prayed the apex court panel to allow it to challenge the appellate court findings of Justices Amina Augie, Rita Nosakhare Pemu and Fatimo Omoro Akinbami, on ground of mis-carriage of Justice. It expressed determination to test the validity and correctness of the decision of the Court of Appeal on the matter. It wants the apex court to determine whether or not there was any direct or circumstantial evidence establishing the guilt passed on Al-Mustapha in the murder case. It justified its lateness in filing the appeal on the ground that it had constituted two legal teams to review the circumstances of the case vis-a-vis the verdict of the Court of Appeal. Lagos State told the apex court panel that it took a long time for the two legal teams to present their findings and recommended that an appeal should be lodged. The state, its notice of appeal marked SC/45/2014, is praying the Supreme Court to not only set-aside the appellate court verdict, but to also restore the death sentence by hanging earlier passed on Al-Mustapha by a Lagos High Court on January 30, 2012.

It will be recalled that Al-Mustapha, Mohammed Abacha and one Lateef Shofolahan were arraigned before a Lagos high court on two-count criminal charge of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Kudirat on June 4, 1996 in Lagos State. Justice Moji Dada had in a judgment in 2012, found the accused persons culpable as charged and sentenced them to death by hanging. The verdict was however, reversed by the appellate court following an appeal Al-Mustapha filed on April 27, 2012 for a review of the trial and conviction.

Jigawa Government Demolishes RCCG And Lords Chosen Church

Jigawa Govt Demolishes Redeemed Church, Others Amid Adeboye’s Resignation

Jigawa Gov. Alhaji Badaru Abubakar
The Jigawa State Government on Wednesday has demolished places of worship in the state including the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), and Lord Chosen Church in Dutse.

This is coming barely 1 week after Pastor Enoch Adeboye resigned as Redeemed Church General overseer in Nigeria over a law by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) which stiputed 20-year maximum tenure for heads of religious groups and civil rights organisations.

Explaning why the churches were demolished, the Executive Secretary of Urban Development Board, Alhaji Garba Isa in Jigawa stated that the churches were built without permission as required by law.
He said that because of the sensitivity of the matter, the board met with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jigawa chapter, emirate councils and the Ministry of Justice, among others.

“We gave not less than three notices to the affected churches to stop development because they failed to obtain permit from the relevant agency of government,” he said.

He said that six structures had been earmarked for demolition and would be done in batches.

According to Isa, the development control department under his agency had the mandate to pull down any illegal structure in the state capital and urban towns.

DESOPADEC Workers Strip Unclad To Protest Non-Payment Of Bonuses

Aggrieved workers of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission went completely Unclad on Monday to protest the alleged non-payment of their bonuses by the board of the commission.

The workers accused the state government and management of the board of the interventionist agency for oil producing communities in the state of maltreating workers through its refusal to pay workers including the controversial 13-month bonus (End of Year Bonus).

They also said the management refused to promote and pay retirement entitlements to pensioners of the commission as well as leave bonuses to workers of the commission since 2015 when the present board assumed office.

The aggrieved workers promised to continue with their protest until the state government listened to their demands and ensure that staff welfare was prioritised. They warned that if by next week their demands were not met, they would occupy government house and the State House Assembly.

A staff who spoke under a strict condition of anonymity said, “What we are protesting is statutory in our engagement later. In 2013 the commission complained that there is no money and appealed that we should allow our salaries to be slashed by 30 per cent and promised that once things improved it shall be restated but up till now it has not.

Coca-cola-sued-for misleading-people-health-risks-soft-drinks

coca-cola-rf-getty.jpg

Coca-Cola has been accused of using tactics similar to the tobacco industry in minimising the damaging health effects of its fizzy drinks and deceiving customers.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Praxis Project accused Coca-Cola and the American Beverage Association, of misleading customers, including children, regarding the health risks of consuming sugary drinks such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Sugary drinks tax could prevent 'thousands from becoming obese'
The lawsuit could potentially shake the soft drinks industry to its core as the company could face marketing restrictions and soda taxes.

Praxis, a non profit group, compared Coca-Cola and ABA's efforts to those of the tobacco industry decades ago.

“From the 1950s until the late 1990s, the tobacco industry engaged in an elaborate campaign of disinformation to cast doubt on the science connecting cigarettes to lung cancer and other diseases,” Maia Kats, litigation director for the centre, said in a statement.

“Like the tobacco industry, Coca-Cola needs to replenish the ranks of its customers, and it tries to recruit them young,” Praxis said in its complaint, filed Wednesday in federal court in Oakland, California.

Praxis accused both defendants of using euphemisms such as "balance" and "calories in, calories out" to mislead consumers, and Coca-Cola, the world's largest beverage company, of trying to mislead the public into thinking a lack of exercise was the real cause of obesity.

The American Beverage Association and Coca-Cola acknowledged the lawsuit.

Kent Landers, a spokesman for Coca-Cola called the lawsuit "legally and factually meritless.”

He said: “We take our consumers and their health very seriously and have been on a journey to become a more credible and helpful partner in helping consumers manage their sugar consumption."

The American Beverage Association called the lawsuit's accusations "unfounded."

The lawsuit comes as beverage companies are trying to fend off regulatory assaults on multiple fronts. A new sugar tax on the soft drinks industry will be introduced in the UK, following the examples of France, Mexico and a set of US cities including San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Coca-Cola previously pledged to increase efforts to reduce added sugar in its products.

Last year, it changed its Coke Zero recipe and renamed it to Coca Cola Zero Sugar to make it “taste more and look more” like the original one.

Coca-Cola took the decision after it found that half of British consumers were unaware that Coke Zero contained no sugar.

“Since 2012 our commercial strategy has focused on accelerating the growth of our no-sugar options. We know that millions of people love the taste of Coca-Cola and have been working to refine the recipe of Coca-Cola Zero to match the taste of the original – but without sugar,’’ said Jon Woods, general manager of Coca-Cola Great Britain.

Tinubu, Dantata, Cole, Ogah, Others Clinch Nigeria’s 1.3mbd Oil Lifting Deal

Abuja — The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, named Wale Tinubu’s Oando, Toye Cole’s Sahara Energy Resources, Sayyu Dantata’s MRS Oil and 36 other companies as winners of the crude oil term contract, for the purchase and lifting of 1.306 million barrels per day of Nigeria’s crude oil for 2017/2018, effective January 1, 2017.

NNPC, in a statement in Abuja, said that the 39 successful bidders comprised 18 Nigerian companies, 11 international oil traders, five foreign refiners, three National Oil Companies, (NOCs) and two NNPC trading arms.

According to the corporation, all the contracts are for 32,000 barrels per day except Duke Oil Ltd, an oil trading arm of the NNPC, which shall be for 90,000 barrels per day.

Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division, COMD, of the corporation, Mr. Mele Kyari, said that the contract will run for one year effective January 1, 2017 for consecutive 12 circles of crude oil allocation.

The other Nigerian companies are: Sayyu Dantata’s MRS Oil and Gas, Uche Ogah’s Masters Energy, Alhaji Auwalu Rano’s A.A. Rano Nigeria Ltd, Oladimeji Edwards’ Hyde Energy, and Uju Ifejika’s Britania-U.

The list also include North West Petroleum and Optima Energy, AMG Petroenergy, Arkleen Oil & Gas Ltd, Shoreline Ltd, Emo Oil, Setana Oil and Prudent Energy.
The International oil traders are Trafigura, ENOC, BP Trading, Total Trading, UCL Petro Energy, Mocoh Trading, Trevier Petroleum, Heritage Oil, Levene Energy, Glencore and Litasco Supply and Trading Company.
In the government-to-government category, the companies are India Oil Company, Sinopec of China and Saccoil of South Africa, while the two NNPC subsidiaries are Duke Oil and Carlson Hyson.

A total of 224 bids were submitted by companies seeking to purchase and lift Nigerian crude oil grades for the period 2017/2018.

During the bid opening in November 2016, Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, had assured the public that NNPC would ensure due process, transparency and fairness in the selection process.

“We will ensure transparency and fairness in the process. There is nothing that is hidden just as you have seen today,” Baru had stated.

Baru had also disclosed that the number of companies bidding dropped from 278 in 2015/2016 to 224 at present, due to the strengthening of the criteria for prospective bidders.

He said NNPC was targeting crude oil refiners, big oil traders, as well as companies that had made substantial investments in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, particularly in the downstream sector.

Baru further stated that the huge number of bidders, despite the stringent conditions, was an indication of the fact that Nigeria’s crude oil grades were in high demand across the globe.

He said: “There have been speculations that we are struggling for market. That is not true. Nigerian crude has continued to earn premiums and they are hot cake for refiners. Because of the light nature of the crude, it induces very high yields on the valuable products that you produced from crude oil. Nigerian crude continues to maintain market.

“In fact, contrary to a lot of speculations that a lot of Nigerian crude goes to China, it does not. Most of them are consumed and refined in India and Europe, particularly, this year and last year, most of Nigerian crude ends up in European refineries.”

FG Resumes Payments To Former Niger Delta Militants

The Federal Government of Nigeria has resumed payments of cash stipends to former militants agreed under a 2009 amnesty in the country's Niger Delta oil hub, a government official said on Thursday.

The government has been holding talks with militants to end attacks on crude pipelines which reduced Nigeria's output by 700,000 barrels a day for several months last year.

Authorities had originally cut the budget for cash payments to militants to end corruption but later resumed payments to stop pipeline attacks crippling vital oil revenues.

"Two months of the ex-militants' stipends were paid yesterday ... The rest of their stipends will be paid later in batches by (central bank) CBN," said Piriye Kiyaramo, an officer in the government's Amnesty Office.

He said the paid stipends covered August and September.

Each former militant is entitled under the amnesty to 65,000 naira ($206.68) monthly plus job training.

Eric Omare, spokesman for the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), which represents the Delta's biggest ethnic group, said former militants had complained to the region's top negotiator handling talks with the government about payment delays.

President Muhammadu Buhari met Niger Delta leaders and representatives for the militants in November to discuss their demands but little progress has emerged publicly since then.

The militants and residents who sympathise with them say they want a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth to go to the impoverished region.

Crude sales make up about 70 percent of government revenue and the attacks have deepened an economic crisis brought on by low global oil prices.

Nigeria currently produces "close to" 1.8 million barrels a day of crude, its oil minister said last month, the latest official figure. Output had been 2.2 million bpd at the start of 2016 when a wave of pipeline attacks began.

Tiwa Savage, Teebillz back together?

For those who love stories with happy endings, this will certainly interest you.

Feelers from Sunday Scoop’s snooping around indicate that estranged lovebirds, singer, Tiwa Savage, and her former manager cum husband, Tunji Balogun aka Teebillz are back in each other’s arms.

It will be recalled that the once lovey-dovey couple washed their dirty linen in public sometime in April 2016, when the couple fell out big time.

Teebillz, who claimed to be the brains behind Tiwa’s music fortunes, accused the singer of cheating on him with several artistes including Don Jazzy, 2face and Dr. Sid. He also blamed Tiwa’s mum for fuelling the crisis in their marriage.

Of course, Tiwa did not just debunk the allegations, she also accused of Teebillz of being a habitual user of drugs   , stealing her money and engaging in extra-marital affairs.

However, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, and it seems the couple has finally put the squabble behind them.

According to a source close to the couple, family members from both sides have intervened in the dispute and have successfully brought about reconciliation. The hitherto estranged lovebirds have now buried the hatchet but not before Teebillz travelled out of the country where he underwent rehabilitation to help with his drug addiction. He returned to the country recently, and has been spending time with his son, Jamal. Also, he and Tiwa are back to living together.

At media personality,  Stephanie Coker and Olumide Aderinokun’s wedding, Tiwa and Teebillz  were the centre of attention.Their first public appearance together since their well-publicised break-up, the duo only had eyes for each other. A besotted Teebillz could not keep his hands away from his wife’s waist.

Our source also disclosed that the couple had been advised to keep their relationship off social media, and from the prying eyes of third parties.

It was also learnt that while the couple was apart, Tiwa, reportedly purchased a house in Jos, Plateau State, where she went to cool off, at the peak of her marriage crisis. She fell in love with the cold and cosy environment in Jos and shelled out several millions of naira to purchase a house in a highbrow area of the Tin City.
