Breaking News-Buhari Removes Ibrahim Magu As Efcc Boss

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, may have finally been removed from office.
His redeployment back to Nigerian Police Force (NPF) was to pave way for a fresh person to be presented by President Muhammadu Buhari as the nominee to head the anti-graft agency before the Senate.

The Guardian gathered to make the situation look like a routine exercise, some senior Police officers would be re-deployed by the Police hierarchy to resume as conventional Police officers.

It was equally reliably gathered yesterday that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has already issued a leter to Magu on the development and directed that he hands over to the Director of Operations in the Commission.
Magu’s nomination was recently rejected by the Senate following allegation of graft levelled against him by the Department of State Security Service (DSS).

Dogs disappear as Ekiti residents eat canine meat

Dogs have disappeared from streets in Ekiti State following a rise in the consumption of dog meat by residents, a check by the News Agency of Nigeria has shown.

NAN reports that more people have increasingly turned to dog meat for their nutrition.

In Ado Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti, Ise Ekiti, Emure Ekiti, Ikole Ekiti and Otun Ekiti, new dog slaughter slabs have sprung up as the residents devour the meat in homes and restaurants.

A resident said no fewer than 20 slaughter slabs existed in Ado Ekiti alone.

“A good number of beer parlours and relaxation centres now make pepper soup and suya from dog meat.

“Because of the high rate of consumption of dog meat, it is now difficult to see dogs on the street and their cost have risen,” the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

NAN reports that three-months-old dogs previously sold for as low as N500, now attract up to N3,000, while adult go for between N6,000 and N15,000 depending on the size.

A veterinary doctor, Kunle Adeyemi, warned against excessive consumption of dog meat, saying, “It is risky and injurious to health due to rabies content in dog flesh and blood.”

Sultan rejects bill seeking equal inheritance for men, women

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday, voiced his opposition to a bill seeking to ensure men and women have equal inheritance rights.

The Sultan said that the bill, which seeks equality for male and female children in the sharing of inherited family wealth or property, is against Islamic religion and, therefore, unacceptable to Muslims.

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III The bill also proposes that a widow is entitled to the custody of her children unless it is contrary to the interests and welfare of the children.

It also seeks that a widow shall have the right to remarry any man of her choice and should have the right to a fair share in the inheritance of her late husband’s property and the right to live in her matrimonial house.
However, the Sultan said: “Our religion is our total way of life; therefore, we will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do.

“Islam is a peaceful religion; we have been living peacefully with Christians and followers of other religions in this country. Therefore, we should be allowed to perform our religion effectively.”

He called on the Senate not to consider the bill because of its religious implications.

The Sultan also hailed the Federal Government and Nigerian Army for the capture of Sambisa Forest from Boko Haram terrorists.

He made the commendation in Gusau at the closing ceremony of the 20th Zamfara State Annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition.

In his remarks, the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, gave the assurance that the state government would continue to support the Qur’anic recitation competition.

Governor Yari and that his wife, Asma’u, donated N500,000 to each male and female winner of the 7th category of the competition— recitation of the Qur’an with Tafsir— who are Faisal Muhammad from Shinkafi Local Government Area and Subai’a Sa’idu from Gusau Local Government Area.

Drug traffickers excrete 50 wraps of cocaine

Two drug trafficking suspects have been arrested with 1.2 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects – David Achebe, 37, and 43-year-old Daniel Ndukwe – met their Waterloo on Saturday during an outward screening of passengers on Ethiopian and Egypt airline flights by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the MMIA.

The detectives were said to have placed the duo on a close watch, during which Achebe excreted 45 wraps of cocaine while Nduwke expelled five wraps of the drug.

Our correspondent gathered that Achebe and Ndukwe had wanted to smuggle the narcotic to Hong Kong and Greece respectively.

Achebe, who deals in electronics, reportedly told investigators that a friend contracted him to traffic in cocaine with a promise of N5m for a successful operation.

He said, “I sell electronics at Alaba market. This is my first time of dealing in drugs. My friend in Hong Kong introduced me to cocaine smuggling. He sent the drug to me. The cocaine was in a black polythene bag containing plantain and pineapples.

“I swallowed the 45 wraps in my toilet without my wife’s knowledge. I was promised the sum of N5m which I had wanted to use in importing electronics. At the airport, they told me that scanning machine indicated that I had drugs on me. That was how I was arrested.”

Ndukwe in his confessional statement said he thought he would scale through the screening due to the small quantity of the drug, adding that he was to be paid N250,000.

“I have lived in Athens (Greece) for over a decade. I lost my job last year and things have been very bad financially. I came to Nigeria to visit my wife and two children. I had no plan to smuggle drugs until a friend called me from Athens that I should bring five wraps of cocaine. Since it is only five wraps, I felt it will be an easy task. He sent someone to give me the wraps in Umuahia (Abia State). I inserted the five wraps in my anus,” he said.

The NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, said a preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects wanted to cash in on the Yuletide, thinking there would be laxity in the screening process.

“Both suspects tested positive for narcotic ingestion and while under observation, they expelled wraps of cocaine which they had wanted to smuggle out of the country. Achebe ingested cocaine weighing 935 grammes while Ndukwe ingested 215 grammes. The suspects are currently under investigation,” Ahmadu added.

The Chairman of the agency, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd), stated that those, who indulged in drug trafficking, would end up in prison custody.

He said, “This is a warning to drug traffickers that the agency is determined to detect all hidden drugs and prosecute offenders. There are control measures in place to detect narcotics at all exit and entry points. We shall continue to improve on our strategies in order to provide a safe society for all.”

Delta may lose out on $250m Ibori loot

The Delta State Government may not get anything from the about $250m worth of assets and money which the United Kingdom claims a former governor, Chief James Ibori, stole from the state, The PUNCH has learnt.

Ibori is currently facing a confiscation hearing which may lead to the permanent forfeiture of all his assets purchased with the proceeds of crime.

The British Government had accused Ibori of stealing about $250m from the Delta State Government part of which was used in buying six houses and luxury vehicles in the UK, the United States and South Africa.

Already the Delta State Government has permanently forfeited $15m of the Ibori loot to the Federal Government for failing to cooperate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to bring Ibori to justice. The state government had even challenged the EFCC’s right to probe Ibori in 2008, insisting that Ibori never stole.

While giving his ruling on the case of the EFCC vs the Delta State Government regarding the ownership of the $15m which Ibori allegedly used in bribing a former Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Justice Gabriel Kolawole had accused the state government of protecting Ibori.

The judge ruled that money recovered from Ibori must be paid into the Federation Account and not the Delta State coffers.

The judge said, “With utmost sense of responsibility as a judicial officer, I view the stiff resistance mounted by the Delta State Government and its official as one which borders on the state’s acquiesce in the looting of its own fund or at best, as that of collaborators with its erstwhile governor on the issue of $15m allegedly offered to former EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu as bribe.”

According to AFP news agency, before Ibori returns to Nigeria, he must face a deportation hearing and then also pay £18m to the UK government as the “proceeds of crime.”

Sources within the EFCC told our correspondent that Delta State had done nothing to assist in the investigation and prosecution of Ibori and should thus not be entitled to any money.

A senior detective told our correspondent that the body language of the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led government suggested that the state government was still in support of Ibori.

A source at the EFCC said, “The state government has not shown any seriousness in helping to recover Ibori’s loot. Back in 2009, the state government did everything possible to frustrate the Federal Government’s efforts and even went to court to challenge the EFCC. They claimed Ibori never stole.

“Much has not changed today because the state government last week issued a statement celebrating the release of Ibori. The Attorney General of the state, Mr. Peter Mrakpor, celebrated Ibori’s release and even called on the Federal Government to pardon him.”

Gunmen kill four grandchildren, nine others in Delta, Rivers

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of a cult on Saturday killed eight people in Omoku town, in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

This is just as the Idumuje-Ugboko town in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State was thrown into pandemonium on Sunday following the killing of a woman and four of her grandchildren by gunmen suspected to be hired assassins.

In the Rivers killing, it was gathered that the bandits invaded the community at about 9pm and shot repeatedly, scaring many people away.

The suspected cult members were said to have positioned themselves on three streets in Omoku before opening fire.

A source in the community, said most residents of the area, especially those who fled as a result of a similar invasion in the past, had returned before the latest attack.

The source said, “I was sitting outside with one of my friends when we heard gunshots. People started running helter-skelter. I ran into the gunmen as I fled to my house.

“They put on military uniforms and were armed. They fired from every direction.

“In the morning, I took a walk around the town and I counted seven corpses. Two Hausa men, who might have been hit by stray bullets, were among them. A member of the Joint Security Task Force was also among the dead.

“At the moment, we don’t know the actual cause of the attack. But we heard that members of a rival cult claimed that the state government settled some groups and abandoned them. They said they would not stop attacking until the government compensated them.”

A resident of the area, who claimed to have narrowly escaped death, Chief Ezegohuru Eluozo, said the attack caused panic and disrupted Christmas celebration in Omoku.

However, the Rivers State Police Command said it was not aware of the incident.

The Police Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said he would inform our reporter after being briefed by the Divisional Police Officer in the area.

Meanwhile, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the council, Mr. Osi Olisa, had restricted the operation of commercial motorcyclists in the area.

Olisa in a statement, advised all commercial motorcycle operators to desist from  commercial activities between the hours of 7pm and 7am.

In the Delta State tragedy, a woman and four of her grandchildren were killed by gunmen suspected to assassins on Christmas day.

The incident which occurred in the agrarian community between late Saturday and early hours of Sunday created tension in the area as residents discussed what led to the gruesome killing of the five members of the same family.

Our correspondent gathered that the victims were shot before their apartment was set ablaze by the assailants. Their corpses were said to have been seriously burnt.

A source gave the name of the grandmother as Comfort Ubani, while the names of the four grandchildren, who were between the ages of six and 13, could not be immediately obtained at the time of filing this report.

A resident of the community, Benjamin Ogbechie, said the hoodlums struck when the deceased were still sleeping and could not raise the alarm.

Another source said, “The victims were shot dead by unknown persons, who thereafter gathered their corpses in the sitting room and set them ablaze.

“The burnt remains of the grandmother and three of the children were found in the sitting room, while the remains of the fourth child were found in the compound. The cause of the fire has yet to be established, but we saw pieces of clothes forced into their mouths.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, visited the scene of the incident and described the incident as pathetic.

He assured the community that the police would apprehend those behind the killings, adding that the matter would not be swept under the carpet.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said investigation into matter had begun.

He added that the corpses had been deposited in a morgue in the area.

Politicians and MMM schemes

Adedapo Osogbo, +2348163495134: I wish to thank Abimbola Adelakun for the enlightenment on the MMM in her article on the back page of The PUNCH, Thursday, December 22, 2016. This kind of practice may never cease. It will only come in different fashions and shapes. What about organised cooperatives within the civil service where you just hear the people above have used the money and even when you know them, you can’t talk. So many absurdities in the society.

Why don’t we begin to beam the searchlight on the politicians cheating and robbing their fatherland and dragging Nigeria down the drain through their fraudulent acts.

Yuletide: How Banks Cashed In On ATM Malfunction - Daily Trust

Banks have made huge income by charging customers N200 for every withdrawal over the counter owing to the failure of some Automated Teller Machines (ATM) to function properly in the country.

Some customers who besieged their banks to make last minute withdrawals were disappointed as they were unable to access funds from the ATMs forcing many to join the long queues in the banks to withdraw using their cheque books or tellers.

Banks charged N200 for each withdrawal over-the -counter by customers, a charge initially put in place to discourage customers from going into the banking hall for small ticket transactions.

Since early last week, some bank networks began to misbehave while some ATMs started to dry-up. Some customers were seen around the bank premises, raising their voices in dismay at the security officials and the failure of the banks to fund the machines.

When Daily Trust visited some banks in Lagos, Ogun and Rivers states, our reporters observed long queues in most of the Deposit Money Banks’ (DMBs) ATM points.

At Oba Akran in Ikeja, Oshodi and Marina in the Lagos metropolis, there were long queues of bank customers lamenting that they had visited several ATMs since day break but could not withdraw their hard earned money.

Similarly, in Agege, Egbeda and Iyana Ipaja, depositors were seen fighting, with security men attached to the banks finding it difficult to curtail the huge crowd.

Some depositors could not withstand the stress and later left, while those that had no alternative waited for hours to get their turn and eventually access to their funds.

A staff of one of the banks, who would not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak to the press said, “the measure may have resulted from the united year end calendar for the banks that want to retain as much deposit as possible to close the month and the year on a positive note.

The banks visited our reporter included First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Ecobank, Zenith Bank, Skye Bank, Fidelity, Diamond and Access.

Some officials of the banks who spoke to Daily Trust, however, debunked allegations of cash crunch in the system and also denied that there was deliberate plan to extort bank customers, claiming that they were servicing the machines to work optimally during the long holiday.

Army takes over Sambisa Forest, service chiefs to reopen roads

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, will today, lead service chiefs to reopen roads hitherto closed by the Boko Haram insurgents in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno State.

One of our correspondents learnt that the roads, which were earlier being manned and controlled by the insurgents ,affected no fewer than 15 villages.

It was learnt that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, will be at the Sambisa Forest.

Buratai had told President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday that the Nigerian troops had successfully crushed “Camp Zero”, believed to be Boko Haram’s last enclave in the Sambisa Forest.

He said the camp fell at about 1:35pm on Thursday and that the terrorists were on the run, because they no longer have a place to hide.

A source close to the air force chief told one of our correspondents that the service chiefs would also have lunch with the troops.

He said, “The defence minister alongside service chiefs will, on Sunday, open some roads earlier closed by the Boko Haram insurgents. The chiefs will also have a Christmas lunch with troops in the frontline.”

Meanwhile, Buhari on Saturday expressed great excitement when Buratai, informed him about the latest development.

The President in a goodwill message he sent to the troops, said he was proud of them and their achievements.

He urged Nigerians to cooperate and support the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies by providing useful information that would expose all the terrorists that could be hiding among the populace.

Buhari said more efforts should be intensified on locating and releasing the remaining girls abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State in 2014.

The President wrote, “I am delighted and most proud of the gallant troops of the Nigerian Army, on receipt of the long-awaited and most gratifying news of the final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest.”

Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Saturday, commended President Buhari and the Nigerian Armed Forces for the success of Operation Lafiya Dole in the notorious Sambisa Forest.

Cashless Christmas: Frustration, anger, as shortage of cash , ATMs network failure persist

There appeared  to be frustration, anger, long queues and anxiety at the weekend among bank customers due to network failure and shortage of cash at automated teller machines, ATMs across the nation, especially in Lagos State where the technology has been fully deployed.

This is even as the  apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN,  continues  to encourage the banking public to use electronic payment solutions such as automated teller machines, PoS terminals, web banking, telephone banking and mobile money transfer to reduce cash in circulation.

A close monitoring of commercial activities  in major cities in  Lagos  at  the Christmas eve yesterday  showed   how many bank customers were running from one ATMs cash point to another making frank efforts to either transfer or withdraw cash.

According to findings, many bank ATMs cash points were either experiencing long queues,  network issue or cash shortage , causing frustration, anger and anxiety  across the nation among  bank customers.

According to keen observers, banks may have been reluctant to re-load ATMs cash point because of incessant network failures among banks and fear of possible attacks by street urchins who were seen  parading all nooks and crannies of commercial nerve centers for possible prey.

Following cash crises that ensured last week, industry watchers have advised banks on timely response with regard to re-loading money in ATMs especially during crisis or emergency periods as experienced.

With this development, customers  who thronged ATMS cash points in major cities across the nation, especially in Lagos to withdraw money for different reasons especially, Christmas shopping  were deeply frustrated.

Sun  Tech News findings revealed that people were scampering from one ATMs cash point to another, looking for machines that could discharge cash.

Meanwhile, commercial banks in the major cities of Lagos on Friday witnessed massive patronage as customers rushed  inside the banking halls to make withdrawal of cash in preparation of the  holidays.

“But the banks should have prepared for  the Christmas holidays. They ought to have arranged for technical staff that will attain to cash shortage  or network failures. Nigerians do not deserve this of kind situation.

“I am here to withdraw money for medical emergency but cannot . It is frustrating indeed. It is sad that we are still experiencing this kind of mess. It is important that the banks deploy robust technologies for e-banking”,  a young man who claimed to be a phone seller at the Computer Village Ikeja but did not want to disclose his name  told Sun Tech news.

According to him, network failure and shortage of cash experienced by the customer have become a regular feature during Christmas period or any other celebration in  the country.

Also speaking with anger and frustration, Obi Okere, a civil servant working in while narrating his experience said that it was time Nigerian banks prepare for situation like this.

“This kind of thing cannot happen in the developed economy. Nigeria banks lack customer care. I do not see the reason why banks cannot brace up for this kind of challenge. Do we derseve this kind of suffering? It is very said that the banks cannot invest in the right technology to save the customers”he said.

For Dayo Balogun, a student at the University of Lagos, despite low key celebration which has become a regular feature during the Christmas , Nigerian banks are frustrating the banking publics as a result of network failure, shortage cash experienced by the customers

“The government is preaching cashless economy but has not put in place the right infratsructure to do that. It is sad to experience difficulty in an apparent attempt to withdraw money this holidays. The CBN must act”he explained.

Despite current challenge, one thing is clear.  The adoption  of ATM card as an alternative and faster means of withdrawing instant cash has grown to appreciable level among Nigerians where even market women and artisans are now getting familiar with the service.

The new technology is seen as bail out option having reduced the number of customers at the banking hall, thereby making Nigeria a cashless economy.

A 33-year-old man, Segun Ogunlusi, who allegedly killed his mother, Abimbola Ogunlusi, on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, has confessed that he killed her because she was persistently asking him for sex.

The suspect was paraded at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Tuesday by the state Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, alongside 23 other suspects who were held for alleged armed robbery, stealing, cultism, and kidnapping.

The tragic incident occurred at No. 16, Oketunde Street, Molatori, Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

Fielding questions from journalists during the parade, the suspect said he was provoked by his mother’s alleged incessant demand for sex.

He said, “I killed my mother because she has been demanding sex persistently from me. She said if I had sex with her, I would be free.

“On a particular Tuesday morning when two of us were at home, she was in the kitchen. I walked up to her and stabbed her in the stomach and she died.

“I poured kerosene on her corpse in a bid to burn her, but the corpse did not catch fire. Later, I dumped the corpse in a soakaway.”

Segun however looked remorseful, and said he regretted his action.

“I regret everything I did,” he said.

Ibori’s return will alter Delta political configuration – Akpeki

                                                            Paulinus Akpeki

FORMER  Chief of Staff to the Delta State Governor and erstwhile Commissioner for Housing, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, has said the return of the former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, will definitely change the political equation in the state.

Speaking to Vanguard, he said: “I feel really happy, of course, Delta missed him. His return will change the political equation in the state. Ibori has a way of reaching out and settling political issues within a political family.”

“He is humble and has respect for seniority in  politics as well as elders. He has a way of talking you into agreeing with him on political issues. Some crises in Delta State political landscape would have not taken place if Ibori were around because he will personally locate wherever you are and come to quietly discuss and settle all issues before others will know,” he said.

Akpeki added: “Ibori has respect for experience and he does not go back on his promises. His only weakness in my opinion is over trusting without verifying the political damage being caused by that category of persons.”

His words: “On the whole, Ibori is a nice man and we will be happy to welcome him back to our great Urhobo land.”
