50kg bag of rice now N8,000 in Ebonyi – CBN

rice1

Central Bank of Nigeria Tuesday in Yenagoa said that a 50 kg bag of Nigeria rice is selling in Ebonyi for N8,000.

This was disclosed by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor, in Bayelsa State.

Speaking at a sensitization workshop for the CBN Anchor programme for farmers, he said: “We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme;   50 Kg of local rice is now N8, 000 in Ebonyi. Already, the Abia Government has ordered rice from Ebonyi for Christmas,”. He said that the Anchor Borrowers Programme   for the promotion of Agriculture has set the country to begin exportation of rice by 2017. According to him, farmers in Kebbi, Jigawa, Ebonyi, Sokoto and Cross River states, among others, have already keyed into the programme, resulting in massive rice cultivation. He said the country would achieve self-sustenance in rice production if the momentum was sustained, adding that the country should commence exportation of locally produced rice by 2017. Okorafor said Kebbi State had already harvested one million tons of rice, adding that Ebonyi’s harvest had outstripped the earmarked production for the year. “The development is encouraging and by the end of 2017, we will not only meet our national demand which is between six and seven million tons but have surplus to export. “We must rid ourselves of eating foreign rice that has been stored for over nine years in Thailand, Vietnam and India. Nigerian rice is fresh and healthier. He further said: “What we have done with this programme so far is to create jobs through farming, especially for the unemployed youths. “Nigerian youths must wake up, dust themselves up and join this worthy campaign. “Remember that the status of our farmers is now better due to the support they are receiving as a result of government’s policy. Our currency is weak because we engaged in needless importation of all kinds of food stuffs, including tooth picks; the government is determined to stop this.” The Branch Controller, CBN, Yenagoa, Mr. Oke Nwajah, said the state was blessed with rich wet soil that supported rice cultivation. He therefore, urged the farmers to take pride in farming, adding that the Anchor Borrowers Programme was an intervention to reduce their burden.

21 Tips To Make Distinction In All Your Courses As A Nigerian Undergraduate

I decided to write this post for the purpose of granting the request of one of the readers of this blog, an undergraduate of university of Benin. He wanted a guide on how to make distinction in all his courses. As much as he’s going to benefit from this article, I also believe you will benefit immensely if you are currently undergoing an academic program in any institution of higher learning. The ideas and academic success principles I am about to share with you are what I have personally applied and have seen worked for other high-flying students I met in the course of my academic journey from primary school to the university level.

What to do to make distinction in your courses include the following:

1. Desire to Make Distinction in All Your Courses Badly: Every achievement in life begins with a DESIRE. If you must make distinction in all your courses, you must have a BURNING desire to achieve that feat. With a burning desire, you will be able to go through every pain and stress necessary to birth your distinctions. When you are faced with obstacles, a burning desire for academic success will propel you to focus on solutions rather than problems. It will keep you going.

2. Write down your goal: Your goal here is to make distinction in all your courses. It is not enough to just have it on your head that you want to make distinction in all your courses, it is important you write it down in your personal journal. Writing down your goals makes them appear tangible and achievable. It is essential that you paste it where you can see it every day. You can paste it beside your mirror or somewhere in your room.

The first thing I always do once I resume for a new term when I was in secondary is to make a list of all my subjects and write the grades I want to have in all. I did same too when I was an undergraduate. The result is that my mates marvel at my academic performance. Some folks in my secondary school days, especially when I was in J.S.S 1 taught I was not ordinary, because they could not imagine how I achieved the feat of making A’s in virtually all my subjects. The reason lies in the fact that I decided to make A’s in all my subjects and I know that if it must be, I must have certain amount of mark in each subject to attain the goal, so I put in the needed effort to achieve my goal. I went on to be among the top 10 graduating students in secondary school out of over 200 hundred students, and graduated with a second class upper from the university. Without academic goals, you can hardly be an outstanding student.

3. Get the course outline of all the courses for the semester: what will be your class of degree, whether a first class, second class upper, second class lower, third class or ordinary pass at the end of your degree program is a combination of your performances in all the semesters that constitute your degree program. Your ultimate success will be determined by the success of each semester. If you can endeavor to do well one semester at a time, you will come out with a satisfactory class of degree, at least a minimum of second class upper.

To have a successful semester, the first thing to do is to get the course outline for all your courses. Everything you are expected to know for the semester is in the course outline, and its content is where your test and examination questions will be drawn from. It is an essential tool that you must have.

4. Get the materials for all your courses: In higher institutions in Nigeria, lecturers usually prepare handout for the course they are taking, and each student is expected to get a copy of the handout, so that they can have access to the components of the course. If you want to make distinction, it essential you get all the materials for your courses. Buy all the recommended handouts and text books for the semester. If you can’t afford them, borrow from those who bought and make photocopy, it is cheaper.

5. Attend lectures regularly: if you want to make distinction in all your courses, it is imperative that you attend lectures. When you are in class, listen to the lecturer. Compare his teachings to the content of the course material. There are some lecturers that teach so many things that you won’t find in the course material, while some teach word for word of what is in the course material. Now, for the lecturers whom you cannot predict what they teach based on their course material, it is essential that you attend their class, in fact don’t miss their class, if making distinction is your goal.

Some brilliant students don’t believe in attending lectures because they believe they can always read, and assimilate the content of the course materials and pass exam. What do you think would happen if most questions are set out of the content of the course material or if the lecturer expects students to answer certain questions based on the explanation he gave in class? Such students no matter how brilliant they are won’t make a distinction in that course. I once failed a course that way. I got to the examination hall only to see questions whose answers can never be found in the course material.

If you must boycott any lecturer’s class, let it be the class of a lecturer whose teaching can be predicted based on the course material. Without attending his class, you will pass if you study the course material properly.

Another reason why it is essential to attend lectures is because of continuous assessment. Continuous assessment is the combination of your class attendance, your contribution in class, assignments and test coupled with the final examination score. Not attending classes will make you lose some mark which may cost you a distinction in that course.

6. Read, Read and Read: If you don’t like reading, you may not be able make distinction in all your courses. You must be ready to read. Try to know the studying method that work best for you and the best time of the day that you can assimilate things faster. To some, their prime time is early in the morning, some prefer afternoon while some get the best out of studies when they study at night. It is your responsibility to know the reading method, and time of the day that works best for you.

If you must make distinction in all your courses, it is imperative that you cover all the components or content of your course outline. It is essential that you read your course material(s) from cover to cover, and digest them properly.

7. Get Past question papers: Research shows that about 50% of questions set for candidates during examination can be found in past question papers of that particular course or subject. Past question paper is a powerful tool you will need to excel in any course. Make effort to get the past question papers of all your courses as early as possible, and learn to use them as the semester progresses. Study the way the lecturer structures his questions, and apply it as you study his course material. Frame questions based on his pattern of setting question for all the contents of the course material, and learn to answer them in the best way possible.

8. Do your assignment and submit promptly: Assignment, whether individual or group is one of the components of continuous assessment. Failure to do and submit your assignment may cost you a distinction, no matter how brilliant you are. For this reason, cooperate with your lecturer by doing your assignment as soon as possible and submit when expected.

9. Always prepare for impromptu test: There are days you will go for lectures as usual, only for the lecturer to tell you to get a sheet of paper, write your name and matriculation number, and your course code. The next thing you will see is questions on the board. If you didn’t anticipate such test, you will be thrown off balance. And if you fail such test due to lack of preparation, that may cost you a distinction. To avoid such failure, I suggest that as soon as you are getting to the middle of the semester, you should always expect test any time you are going for lectures and always prepare in advance.

10. Find out the marking style of the lecturers: if you want to make a distinction in a course, it is important you know the way the lecturer expects students to answer his questions. Some lecturers want you to give them verbatim what they taught you or what are in their course material, while others want you to come up with something out of the box but still in line with what you were taught. Having this knowledge and answering his questions based on his expectation will earn you your distinction without stress. You can get this information from senior colleagues who have passed through the lecturer.

11. Prepare adequately for examination: At the end of every semester, you are going to write exam in all the courses for that semester. If you have followed the previous instructions, you will definitely be prepared for the final exam. You must make adequate preparation for the exam. Adequate preparation include, covering the course outline, reading all the recommended course materials, reading the note taken in class during lectures and practicing past questions.

12. Don’t miss the revision class prior to exam: Examination is never a battle between the lecturers and students. It is the joy of every good teacher to see that his students excel at the end of the semester.
During final revision that precedes examination, the teacher most often do their best to give students hints on possible areas that questions are likely to come out from. Prior to this time, they have set their questions, and submitted them to the faculty management.

By being attentive to what the lecturer says in the revision class, you will have a glimpse of possible questions to be expected and areas you need to focus on in the course material or lecturer’s note. Missing such class can cost you a distinction.

13. Choose your friends wisely: it is important to note that the people with whom you associate as a student play a very big role in your academics. You must make effort to relate with students who are serious minded; students who have burning desire for unlimited academic success. These set of students would challenge and motivate you to be up and doing. Associating will them with keep you alert and help you to focus on your academic goals. Always remember that “he that walks with the wise shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.” It is better to be a loner as a student than to be in the company of unserious folks. Choose your friends wisely!

5 Things to Do On the Examination Day

The examination day is the day to reap every effort you have been making right from day one of the semester, so if you make any mistake that day, you may end up losing your reward. I suggest that you do the following five things on the examination day.

14. Be early to the exam venue: It is essential you get to the exam hall or venue at least fifteen minutes before the exam commences. This will give you the opportunity to relax and get your mind ready for the exam.

15. Go with all the needed examination kit: This may include your pen, mathematical set, your Id card, and everything you will be in need of in the examination hall. Don’t go to the exam hall with the plan of borrowing anything you will need. Doing so will slow you down, and can even cost you your distinction.

16. Write your name and matriculation number where they are needed: There have been cases where students submit answer booklet and forget to write their name and matriculation number. To avoid this mistake, write your name, matriculation number, and course code as soon as you get your answer booklet.

17. Read the instructions thoroughly and comprehend them before you solve the questions: Take note of the instructions in your question paper and solve the questions in obedience to them. Most often, examiners use such words as list, state, enumerate, discuss, explain, and define and so on. You are expected to answer the questions based on the command or instruction given in the question paper. Disobedience to instruction due to error in understanding the instructions or answering the question in a way that is not consistent with the instructions simply to show the lecturer that you are brilliant can cause you fail.

18. Write legibly: If you have a bad handwriting, such that only you can read your work, you will fail no matter how brilliant you are. When writing examination, write in such a way, that even a blind man can read what you write. When you give the right answers using clear and legible hand writing, you can never be denied of distinction.

19. Work with time: Duration of time is always allotted to examination; it is your duty to make sure you answer as many as possible questions within the time given. If you know the answers but too slow to solve all the questions before the time elapses, you will lose your chances of making a distinction. What you need here is speed and accuracy.

20. Revise your answers before submitting: Don’t be in a rush to submit. Nobody is given a distinction for being the first to submit. Check your work properly; make corrections where necessary before you submit. And when submitting, make sure you submit in the right place because there are cases where students of different levels write exam simultaneously in the same hall. The school management often makes such arrangement in an attempt to curb examination malpractices. It will be a great mistake to have your script mixed up with a different group of students due to your own error. This kind of mistake is probably why some students do have missing script issue. Once again, make sure you submit where you should submit.

21. Keep praying till you see your result: You have done your best, now it is time to leave the rest to God. The kind of prayer you should pray is left to you. You must have it in mind that God will help you only when you have helped yourself by following the instructions in this article.

GSM subscribers to pay more for data from Dec.1

Subscribers of the Global System of Mobile telecommunications across the country would pay more for data with effect from December 1, 2016, The PUNCH learnt on Monday.

Although the telecoms companies declined to speak on the matter, top management workers across the networks confirmed the story to our correspondent, saying that the directive was from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior management employee of Etisalat Nigeria said, “The NCC issued the directive late last week on the orders of the Federal Government. We have not announced it yet because most of the major telcos have been meeting the NCC on how to reverse this policy, because it will be too harsh for Nigerians.

“However, we further gathered that the Federal Government took the decision having discovered that data rates are very low-priced in Nigeria, compared to other countries, including nearby African countries.

“The government might have also taken the decision given that Nigerian subscribers have been kicking against the proposed nine per cent Communication Tax, whose bill is currently in the National Assembly.”

Pleading not to be mentioned, an employee of MTN said, “What this means is that MTN, Airtel, Etisalat And Globacom will increase their data rates as from December 1, 2016. A data plan of N1,000 for 1.5 Gigabytes will now be increased to N3,000 at N1,000 per 500 Megabytes.”

In text messages sent out to its subscribers, MTN, Africa’s mobile telecommunications giant, confirmed that it had agreed to implement the directive of the NCC.

The MTN text read, “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st of December, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC for operators. Thank you.”

The PUNCH could not obtain an official response from the NCC at of the time of filing this report.

However, a representative of the commission said that the telecoms regulator was unaware of such plans by the operators, even as she said her bosses had claimed ignorance of the circulated message.

“We are unaware of it. I just asked my bosses; they are unaware. We will forward your query to MTN for appropriate attention,” she said over the telephone.

However, in a letter by the NCC to the operators sighted by our correspondent, the commission stated, “This rate will subsist pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria.

“In order to provide a level playing field for all operators in the industry, small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably, small operators and new entrants are hereby exempted from the price floor for data services.”

It added, “For the avoidance of doubt a small operator is one that has less than 7.5 per cent market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market.

“All operators are to ensure that subscribers are not automatically migrated to pay-as-you-go platform.

“Also, note that effective date for the interim price floor is December 1, 2016.”

Reacting to the development, the President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, Mr. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said that the NCC representative was being economical with the truth.

He said that for MTN to have sent out millions of text messages to its subscribers “clearly shows that the NCC indeed issued the directive.”

Ogunbanjo, however, said that the association would resist the tariff hike, adding, “We will challenge it in court. We are going right away to set the machinery in motion. We are also going to do an urgent letter to the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, which we will drop in his e-mail box.

“Unfortunately, the notice is short; today is November 28, yet the order will take effect from December 1. It is not just good for broadband penetration, whatever the reason may be. It is against telecoms subscribers.”

According to him, data availability means more youth engagement because they use data to develop apps and build software.

“But with what the NCC has done, these boys who develop apps will be slowed down and limited. The cost of doing business will also increase,” he added.

Buhari Plots Osinbajo’s Replacement With Kalu - The Point Newspaper Says

The newspapers for Monday, November 28, focus on an alleged plot by President Buhari to replace Osinbajo with Kalu.

The Point newspaper reports that the camp of President Muhammadu Buhari may be planning to replace vice president Yemi Osinbajo with a politician from the southeast ahead of the 2019 elections.
The paper reports that the presidency plans to woo a former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, as a possible replacement for Osinbajo in the next general elections so as to pacify the southeast.

According to The point, the Buhari camp, sensing a potential loss of support and electoral votes from the south west, in the event of the Tinubu forces pulling out, is tinkering with options to win over the south east and perhaps south south blocs.

“With many gladiators, who joined forces to see APC through to victory during the last elections already fingered in the movement to form a new mega party, there is intense calculation being done to get a crowd-puller from the South East geo-political zone. This is to garner substantial votes from the region to shore up what may be lost should the South West go with Tinubu,” one of the sources said.

EPL: Arsenal maintains fourth spot, Mourinho booted out

wenger-arsene-arsenal_3412029

Arsenal ended a run of three successive draws as Alexis Sanchez scored twice and Theo Walcott once to secure victory over Bournemouth.
The pressure was on the Gunners after rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City won on Saturday, and they were gifted the lead when Steve Cook’s poor back pass allowed Sanchez to calmly sidefoot past keeper Adam Federici.
But Callum Wilson equalised with a penalty after referee Mike Jones judged the striker was fouled by Nacho Monreal and, against a rattled home side, Bournemouth missed two good chances when an unmarked Adam Smith headed over before Brad Smith had an angled shot saved.
Arsenal almost restored their lead when a Sanchez strike came off the crossbar but Walcott did score when he headed in a Monreal cross. Monreal escaped conceding another penalty when a Simon Francis pass struck him on the arm in the area before keeper Petr Cech made a crucial save from Benik Afobe.
Sanchez made sure of the win when he slotted in an Olivier Giroud cross, moving the Gunners three points behind top-flight leaders Chelsea and two shy of Liverpool and City.
Jose Mourinho was sent off for a second time in a month as his Manchester United side drew 1-1 against West Ham at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese boss kicked a water bottle in reaction to referee Jon Moss showing Paul Pogba a yellow card for diving. Replays showed West Ham’s Mark Noble did not make contact with the France midfielder.
Mourinho, sent off by Mark Clattenburg during last month’s 0-0 draw at home to Burnley, got his marching orders from the official moments later. Moss also dismissed him in October 2015, when Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea.
The touchline drama came after two goals in the first quarter of the match.
The Hammers took the lead in the second minute when Diafra Sakho headed in from Dimitri Payet’s free-kick. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was partly at fault for the goal but made amends in the 21st minute when he nodded in from Pogba’s dinked delivery.
The hosts were thwarted on several occasions by Hammers goalkeeper Darren Randolph, while Jesse Lingard had the ball in the net for the home side but it was correctly ruled out for offside.

Senate makes U-turn, drops already cleared Buhari’s nominee

ABUJA—TWELVE days after the Senate cleared Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla, Cross River, South South, as a non-Executive Commissioner on the governing board of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, it has made a dramatic turn by dropping his name from the list of successful nominees sent to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Obono-Obla’s name was  removed in the letter transmitted to Buhari as one of those confirmed by the legislature. In the letter dated November 22, signed by Senate President Bukola    Saraki, a copy of which was obtained yesterday, Obono-Obla was listed as one of the three whose nominations were rejected by the Senate. It would be recalled that Oboni-Obla was among the five whose nominations by President Buhari were approved by the Senate on November 17, 2016, while two of the nominees were dropped. At the plenary, those whose appointments were confirmed were Senator Olabiyi  Durojaiye (Chairman/Ogun/South-West), Senator Ifeanyi Ararume(Non- Executive Commissioner/Imo/South East), Sunday Dare (Executive  Commissioner, Stakeholders Management/Oyo/South-West), Okoi Ofem; Obono-Obla (Non-Executive  Commissioner/Cross River/South-South) and Clement Omeiza Baiye  (Non-Executive Commissioner/Kogi/North-Central). The lawmakers, however, dropped  Aliyu Abubakar (Non-Executive  Commissioner/Bauchi/North-East) and Pastor Ezekiel Yissa  (Non-Executive Commissioner/Kwara/North-Central). According to the report of Senator Gilbert Nnaji led Committee on Communications, Pastor Ezekiel was rejected because of his background as a nursing officer. The second nominee rejected by the Senate, Alitu Abubakar, had repeatedly called for the scrapping of the Senate, even when he appeared before the Senate for screening, saying the existence of the Senate was not justifiable. He also pointed out that the upper chamber was only wasting the nation’s resources by its existence. Obono-Obla, who is the Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, attached to the Ministry of Justice, protested in an email sent yesterday against what he described as back-door removal. The mail was titled, Can the Senate President unilaterally overrule the confirmation of a nominee by the Senate? The nominee, who asked why he was removed after the Senate had confirmed his nomination, simply said:  “The entire major electronic and print media organs in the  country, on November 17 and 18, 2016, carried the confirmation  by the Senate of the Board of Nigerian Communications Commission. “Surprisingly and curiously, the Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, in a letter dated November 22, 2016, to President Muhammadu Buhari, titled ‘Confirmation of Appointments,’ falsely stated that the Senate did not confirm the following nominees: Aliyu Saidu Abubakar; Pastor Ezekiel Yissa and Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla.”

Top 5 Ways To Impress Women

Following are the top five ways to impress the real women:

1. Just be yourself - Instead of imitating someone, it is better to be just the way you are. You don't need to do a lot of things to impress them; all you need to do is be who you are. they like men who know how to express their emotions and put their innermost feelings into words. Unless you do that, you can never have the right kind of a woman walking by your side.

2. Don't be too hard on yourself - The worst thing that most men do is strive hard to impress women. Don't do that - all you've got to do is keep it simple and learn how to respect her and you would gain her attention. Defend her, always make a difference in their lives and give them the impression that you are always their for them when they need you the most.

3. Don't try to impress them - I know a lot of men do this - they try to impress the ladies with their style, fashion and a lot of such materialistic things. Instead of playing the impression game, which does not last for long, try to be casual and keep it low. If a woman falls in love with you for your style, remember, she has to see you in your informal outfits at home in future, when you both plan to settle down together.

4. Express yourself in bed - Let's face it - most women now know what they want from their men. They are open and now believe in communicating about what they want in bed. If you have a woman in your life and you want to sustain her, you have surely got to be good in bed.

5. Keep her satisfied - I don't say that intimacy is the only thing between two lovers, but it is obviously one of the most important things that allow two people to maintain love between each other. Keep her relaxed and satisfied in bed and see the glow on her face.

He said the church is only planning to hold one next year by February, 15th 2017, when the church intends to storm the National Stadium for healing service and wants everyone to be there to see the power and glory of God at work.

“When I read the fake and cooked story I started speaking in tongues because the devil is out to propagate God and celebrates Jesus.

“We also heard how they said a trader whom they claimed I paid to act for me and in the process he died.

“Who then was the trader? Who are his relations? Which police station they took to? Which cell I was detained? All these are questions begging for an answer.

Bishop Esezobor said the challenges have made him a champion and that he saw it as a stepping stones to greater things.

“Healing is real and I preach it, the Bible says “I shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

“I have seen God do mighty things in righteousness and this is a big motivation coming at the end of the year making us more sensitive and prayerful.

“We know that the devil is after the body of Christ and I pray for all the pastors to go back to their prayer alters as we are over comers.” He added.

Zimbabwean Pastor Beaten After Impregnating His Follower

A street pastor was on Tuesday humiliated in Mufakose area of Zimbabwe over allegations of impregnating one of his followers before dumping her.

Pastor Ignatius Neshava, who preaches at the open space between Leopold Takawira and Speke, went to Lisa Rwizi’s place of residence after he was trapped by her relatives who lured him to come, disguising to be his followers who needed prayers for a sick relative.

“I have never been involved in a sexual relationship with Lisa. I only know her as a follower. She was in a relationship with one guy called Sithole, who is also a member of my church.

“She has never been at my house and how old is the child she is claiming that I’m the father? Why did she wait to give birth before confronting me about the pregnancy? If I was responsible, I’m sure she knew where to find me.”

Lisa, however, gave overwhelming evidence of her claims when she told him where his birth mark was adding that he had some wounds on his thigh and one of his legs that she used to nurse before the ‘pastor’s wife’ also concurred that he indeed had scars on the mentioned areas.

“I know this man, I slept with him and we lived as husband and wife for three months after he lured me from the streets where he was preaching, promising to get me a job as a maid.

The ‘pastor’s wife’ wept uncontrollably as all this evidence emerged during the interrogation..

Lisa further narrated how she was told by Ignatius that he lived with his wife in Hatcliffe promising to offer her accommodation until she got a job.
But upon arriving at his residence, Lisa realised that the pastor did not live with a wife and he only occupied a room at his lodgings.

“I had just lost my job as a maid in Chitungwiza and as I walked in town, I heard him preach so after his preaching sessions, he prayed for me before offering to get me a job.

“I really looked miserable as I had nowhere to go since I’m an orphan so after I told him my story, he took advantage of my desperation.

“He had told me that he lived with his wife but when we got to his place I found out that there was no woman at his place. On the first night I slept on the floor together with one guy called Panashe, whom he had also promised to help find a job,” she narrated.

Lisa said as days went on, the pastor started making sexual advances insisting that she could only continue staying with him if she agreed to have sex with him.

“I had tried to resist his advances but on the third day when he came home in the middle of the night, he told me that if I was not going to have sex with him, then I should find somewhere else to go.

“I had no option but to sleep with him as he had threatened to kick me out at night. After that we had sex every other day and started living as husband and wife for about three months,” she chronicled.

She recounted her ‘horror’ days that followed after giving in to the pastor’s sexual advances saying the man of cloth would not buy any food and she would go for days without eating.

“He started buying fast-foods and he would eat alone while he was not buying any groceries. I survived from handouts from our landlord before I was told of how he (Ignatius) was in the habit of bed hoping and that I was not the first victim.

“I then got a job in Dzivaresekwa and the woman agreed that I work while I was pregnant. My employer helped me until I gave birth as she paid all the bills,” she added.

The situation was calmed when police officers came to disperse the crowd that was baying for the pastor’s blood.

The pastor, Lisa and her relatives were later whisked to Marimba Police station.

The pastor later reportedly said that he was a victim of criminal abuse and had reported the case at Marimba Police Station under RRB 2987226.

He said the police picked up nine of the assailants at the scene of his humiliation.

Atiku's Wife Defrauded Of N918m By Nsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs

How I Was Defrauded Of N918m, Atiku’s Wife Tells Court

Mrs Aminat Titi Abubakar, wife of former Nigeria’s Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday told a Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja of how she was defrauded of N918 million by a former governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom State, Nsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Jacobs, Abdulmalik Ibrahim and Dana Motors on a 15-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and fraudulent conversion of properties belonging to THA Shipping Maritime Services Ltd.

Led by the prosecution counsel, Mr Babatunde Sonoiki, told the court presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye how Akpan allegedly defrauded her of her shares in the company and other proceeds.

She told the court thàt Akpan Jacobs who doubled as the company’s managing director and secretary had allegedly gone to the Corporate Affairs Commission where he altered the share arrangement in his favour.

She alleged Akpan forged a company board resolution re-distributing the shares ownership and alloted 70 per cent to himself , 15 per cent to her and 15 per cent to Holmes.

With the shares re-distribution, Akpan Jacobs was alleged to have fraudulently assumed full ownership of THA Shipping and subsequently sold a property worth N918m belonging to the company to Dana Motor Nigeria Limited.

When asked, she said Akpan told her that he allotted major shares to himself in other to obtain loan from the bank for the company.

Testifying further before the court, Mrs Atiku stated that Akpan Jacobs , a pastor used the proceeds from the sales of the company’s property to contest for the governorship position in Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs Atiku lamented that her investment in the company had gone down the drain and stated that her interest in coming to court is to ensure that justice is done.

“I have never been inside a court before. Not even a police station in all my life. I am here because I want justice. All my investment and even profit are gone. I want this to serve as a deterrent to other fraudsters that they can’t defraud people and not face justice”, she said.

Part of the charge preferred against the defendants by the EFCC stated: “that ýNsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs and Abdulmalik Ibrahim as the Managing Director and Company Secretary on or about the 10th day of August 2008 in Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud stole and converted to your own personal use the sum of N918,000,000.00 being proceeds sale of the property and appurtenances situted at Plot C63 A Amuwo Odofin Commercial. Layout along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos belonging to Tha Shipping and Maritime Service limited entrusted with you as the Managing Director.

ý”Nsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs and Abdulmalik Ibrahimý on or about the 1st day July 2002 in Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud forged a Memorandum and Article of Association of Tha Shipping and Maritme Service Limited dated the 1st day of July 2002 purporting the sgnatures therein to have been signed by Florence Doregos and Fred Holms.”

Justice Ipaye adjourned the matter till December 14 for continuation of hearing.

Breaking: Buhari to run for second term in 2019, Presidency confirms

Buhari

ABUJA-With just one year and seven months into the four years term of the administration of President Muhammdu Buhari which will terminate in 2019, the Presidency has given sure indication that the President would seek a second term in office.

It also vehemently dismissed comments that it would be a lonely walk for the President, a development expected to serve as a punishment for perceived bad governance. The refutation was a sharp reply to a statement credited a former member of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Alhaji Buba Galadima, that the people of Nigeria would abandon Buhari should he choose to seek re-election. In a strong worded statement Monday night, the Presidency, through the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, stated that the “suggestions that the masses will desert President Buhari in 2019 was unfounded and utterly ridiculous.” Shehu asserted:  “Ordinary Nigerians are the backbone of his mandate and the only reason he ran for the office is to protect them against the rapacious merchants of corruption, who have held Nigeria back for decades.   Galadima’s calculation and prediction are utterly confused and misleading.” According to the presidential spokesman, “the masses are solidly behind Buhari because he is not stealing their money and their future. ‘’President’s enormous goodwill remains ever strong because the people are convinced the President is acting in their best interest, despite the temporary unintended consequences of reforms.” Suggesting vendetta and strong animosity against the person and the government of Buhari, Shehu recalled that an age-long face-off between both Arewa leaders in their CPC days, revealing that it was the reason Buhari discarded the likes of Galadinma in the 2015 elections he ran and won. He urged Galadima to retire to his constituency and stand an election if he still enjoyed the goodwill of his people. “President Muhammadu Buhari is far from isolation. He enjoys a very strategic relationship with ordinary Nigerians. This relationship is as solid as the proverbial rock. ‘’If Buba Galadima thinks that because he has no role and no job in this government that means President is isolated, he is putting himself to ridicule. “Galadima cannot speak for the masses as far as their steadfast loyalty to Buhari is concerned. While acknowledging that Galadima was entitled to advance his own political agenda, Malam Garba said Galadima didn’t have the right to decide for ordinary voters. “Buba Galadima’s disagreement with President Buhari was based on principle. He explained that President Buhari is committed to level playing field and would not want anyone to link his name to injustice.” “Galadima’s disagreement with Buhari started in 2011 when a group within the party, orchestrated an organizational mess by which the CPC embarked on the imposition and substitution of candidates for cash payments at the expense of those duly and democratically elected. “Muhammadu Buhari was embarrassed by the incidents and complaints about the imposition and substitution of candidates, adding that he, as a democrat, would not suppress the will of the people to please selfish interests. “Consequently he dispensed with the service, such as they are, of Buba Galadima; ran and won the 2015 Elections without them. Let Buba Galadima go to his constituency, stand for election and see what will happen to him”, Shehu stressed.

Woman, 70, sold my niece for N500,000 – Delta man

                                 Suspect

A resident of Ndemili community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, Festus Nwaomucha, has narrated how a kidnapping gang, which included a 70-year-old woman, sold his five-year-old niece for N500,000

According to Nwaomucha, a number of children had been going missing in the community over time but on September 24, his niece, Glory Oyibo, was snatched right from the family compound in Ndemili, throwing the family into a panic over what might have happened to the little girl.

He said for over two weeks, the family made several efforts to locate the child but they got a break on November 13, when news filtered in that two kidnappers had been caught in Issele-Uku, a suburb of Asaba, with two children in their vehicles.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that when the two suspects – Emmanuel Udagwu, a resident of Agbor Alidinma and Celestina Enebeli from Ulogwe Isumpe – were arrested by the police, they confessed to have been involved in some previous kidnapping of children from Ndemili and surrounding communities.

Nwaomucha said the two communities the suspects come from, share boundaries with Ndemili. They confessed kidnapping about nine children so far in the entire localities.

“When they kidnapped children, they transported their victims to Asaba, where a 70-year-old-woman received the victims for onward ferry to other places for sale,” he said.

The septuagenarian, who has since been arrested has reportedly made statements about the clients he sold the children to.

“The old woman confessed that she had sold my little niece along with another victim, a boy, for N500,000 to some people in the East. She sold them through another man in Asaba. The man outsmarted us during arrest, abandoning his taxi colour car,” he said.

The police have said efforts are still ongoing to recover Glory and other stolen victims from wherever the gang sold them to.

“I want to thank all those who have been standing by my family through prayers, which have paid off. We are still praying for Glory to be alive in captivity so that she can be found in good health and reunited with her parents and other siblings, who have not stopped crying day and night since she was kidnapped,” Nwaomucha said.

The police have said they are working to ensure that other members of the gang were rounded up while the identities of missing children would be determined to effect their recovery from where they are sold to.

Military Bombards Militant Camp In Delta, Many Feared Dead

SOME militants were suspected to have lost their lives when troops of the Operation Delta Safe bombed a militant camp at Okosugbene Creek, along Burutu-Warri River, near Burutu, Delta State, with two fighter jets and about seven gun boats for nearly an hour on Thursday.

Reports from the area said that soldiers, who struck at about 6.00 am caught the militants unawares.

But while a source said it was an abandoned militant camp belonging to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, another hinted that it was occupied by sea pirates.

Information about the casualties of yesterday’s attack was still unclear at the time of this report, but the raid caused tension among riverine dwellers. They ran helter-skelter at the sound of heavy gunshots.

Another informant, who spoke to Vanguard, said the militant camp is located at Lapala village, near Burutu.

However, a youth leader from Burutu community, who confirmed the attack, said: “I heard several gunshots on Thursday morning from the community.”

“From our findings, we discovered that the military had invaded the gathering of suspected militants, who had converged on the community in what could be likened to a militant camp.”

Shedding light on the raid, a senior operative of the Department of State Security, DSS, said: “There were intelligence reports that suspected militants are converging on the area.

“Troops from the Operation Safe Delta were drafted to engage the militants and dislodge the camp located at an area known as 9000 Junction,” he said.

At about 9.00 am, former chairman of Burutu community, Jonathan Ogodobiri, who spoke on phone, asserted: “There are no army troops within Burutu town but the entire waterways is under siege. There is a massive presence of army personnel patrolling the river as I speak with you.”

MMM membership grows despite Reps order to security agents- Vanguard

Some Abuja residents on Thursday said that they have benefited immensely from the popular financial programme, MMM Nigeria Scheme, and have no intention of leaving the scheme anytime soon. The Mavrodi Mondial Movement popularly known as MMM has gained popularity among Nigerians as the programme promises a monthly payment of 30 per cent interest on loans provided by participants. This is against the backdrop of the House of Representatives order in November that operators of the scheme should be arrested to protect Nigerians from financial devastation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in spite of the order, MMM’s membership had continued to grow. Some residents who spoke to NAN said that MMM was very beneficial to Nigerians. Ebube osakwe, a civil servant told NAN that she doesn’t see the programme as a Ponzi scheme and believed it could help many Nigerians. “When I heard about it, I was skeptical at first, but I decided to test the system by putting in N20,000 to see if I would get the money they claimed. “To my surprise, a month later, I got my N20,000 with my 30 per cent interest and an extra bonus. “I was amazed by the success so I put more money into the system and have benefitted from it. “This programme has helped many Nigerians deal with this recession so I don’t see the wrong in it.” Godwin Dickson, a mechanic said that the scheme had helped him with his finances, adding that it had assisted him immensely in paying his debts. “I don’t care what anyone has to say about MMM because as far as I am concerned, it has saved my life. “I have paid off my debts and I have been able to generate extra change to take care of my household. “I owed someone a large sum of money and someone introduced me to MMM and loaned me N500,000 to put into the scheme. “The money I got back was able to clear all my debts at once and I was able to finally breathe again. “I am aware of the risks of this programme, but it is also a lifesaver and I will advise more Nigerians to get involved at least for now that it seems safe,” he said. Joyce Okoh, an entrepreneur, said that she was certain the business would crash at a point, but she would take advantage of it while it lasts. “I know that this programme has failed before in some countries and I admit it is a sort of Ponzi scheme but why should I complain when I am benefitting from it? “MMM is bound to fail whether the government bans it or not, because the process is supported by new members funding the profits to be made by older members which will crash at some point. “However, I have made a large sum of money from this programme and I am willing to continue reaping the benefits it is offering for now. “I just have to ensure I don’t get greedy and invest my whole savings or sell my property like many people have done because when it crashes, people will become suicidal. “I think the key thing here is to know your limit and know when to bow out of the programme,” she said. Prostitutes In Zimbabwe Are Now Raping Clients To Make More Money!

Hookers plying their trade in selected areas in Zimbabwe have reportedly become dangerous to their clients.

They now team up with other male counterparts to drag clients into their rooms forcing them into sex in order to beat the hard times.

According to H-Metro, the syndicate will be roaming the area and once they pounce on their prey, the hookers offer very affordable prices before they take you to their room where they search you and force you to have sex with them for the money they would have taken.

H-Metro spoke to one of the victims who refused to identify himself and he narrated his ordeal after
falling prey to three hookers.
“I am a student and I was walking along Samora Machel where three hookers pounced on me and offered me sex for US$2 of which I refused.
“They insisted but I said I would give them the US$2 they wanted so that they will let me free but before I could say anything more, two more men appeared and helped the ladies to drag me to a room upstairs at a local hotel.”
The victim said, whilst in the room, he refused to have sex but the ladies wouldn’t take any of his words.
“One of the ladies undressed and lied on the bed Unclad and offered me sex. I was cornered and I had to ask for a condom which they gave me and I had sex with her while other two were looking.”
“Whilst I was contemplating my next move, the other one requested to have sex with me as well and I turned down the offer before she called the two men who were outside.
“As soon they entered there was confusion in the room and they searched me of all my valuables.”
He added:
“After the noise, the ladies shared the money and ordered me to leave the room while they remained behind with the two men.
“I had to plead for a dollar to use for transport home.”
However, the incident is not the first but several men have failed to open up on such incidents where they have been pounced on by hookers.

Instead of reporting they are ashamed of making reports on such cases thereby giving them a gratitude to continue.
“It’s hard to report kuti wabatwa nemahure, unozvitaura uchiti kudii, zvinomakisa.
“If you fell prey to such better kungoita easy unless watobirwa mari yakawanda,” said another man.
Meanwhile, H-Metro reports they hung around the area where some hookers paraded their ‘thighs’ and witnessed the same scenario.

The hookers will be standing as individuals but as they negotiate their colleagues approach.
“I have seen men falling victims to hookers who just mob you and force you into their rooms where they can extort you.
“One may assume people are in agreement but it won’t be that,” said one vendor who operates along central Avenue.

Olukoya Set To Lose Mountain Of Fire Prayer City - Sahara Reporters

Founder and General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, is on the verge of losing the vast land on which MFM Prayer City sits.

A court ruling delivered on 12 May by Justice A.A Akinyemi of the Abeokuta Division of the High Court of Ogun State stated that the Adejonlu family are the bona fide owners of the land on which the famous crusade and camp ground sits in the Ogun State section along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.

This implies that Mr. Olukoya's church had bought the land from, and paid, the wrong people. Ownership dispute over the the land began in 2003 and took the form of litigation via two different cases (Suit Nos. AB/60/2003 and AB/61/2003) between the Adejonlu and Oduleye families.

Justice Akinyemi's ruling, exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, declared the Adejonlu family genuine owners of the land situated in Magada, Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area, and that they are entitled to the right of occupancy over the land.

Following the ruling handing ownership and right of occupancy to the Adejonlu family, their lawyer, Mr. R. O. Sadik, told SaharaReporters that he wrote many letters to Mr. Olukoya for negotiation and settlement. Mr. Sadik said he took the steps because of the profile of the pastor and his church.

One of the letters, sighted by SaharaReporters, was dated 7 July and signed by one Miss Lateefa Sadik for Mr. Sadik's chambers. The letter recalled a meeting held between the legal firm and MFM representatives led by one Pastor Alewi.

The letter then proceeded with demands by the land owners. Notably, the landowners requested the church, assisted by their lawyers, to determine the size and portion of their land on which MFM Prayer City sits. The letter also demanded a payment of N5million per plot to cover the acreage that would be agreed on by the land owners and the church. Similarly, the letter demanded the immediate payment of 40 per cent of the total cost of the acreage agreed upon.

But these demands, Mr. Sadik told SaharaReporters, have been met with indifference. According to him, Mr. Olukoya is unwilling to negotiate with the landowners. He, however, warned that the owners are keen on enforcing the court ruling and taking full possession of the land.

"We have written to Dr. Olukoya over 10 times, and it is like he is not ready for settlement. He set up a committee, which was headed by Pastor Alewi, to look into the matter and our follow-up investigation shows that the report of the committee has got to Dr. Olukoya. But we have not heard any positive comment from him. In fact, his body language does not suggest he is ready to pay any money for the land belonging to my client," Mr. Sadik said. He explained that he met with representatives of the church on 8 October, but Mr. Olukoya was not at the meeting.

"Presently, we are the practical owners of the land, according to the judgment delivered by the Court, but the pastor is unlawfully and illegally using it and selling part of it thereby making money off us while we are not getting anything," alleged Mr. Sadik.
Another party to the matter, Chief Gbolahan Timson (Oba Jagunmolu of Shomolu/Bariga), said he was disappointed by Mr. Olukoya's conduct all through the time of litigation. He also claimed that Mr. Olukoya went back on his promise and his failure to act is affecting the family members.

"The Oduleye family were so greedy, and they were bent on taking over our land. For this reason, they went ahead sue us. We were served the court letter right in the office of Dr. Olukoya, and he said good luck to the winner and that he would settle whoever won the case. He made that statement when the case started 13 years ago. Now that we have won, he decided not to pay us. We explained to him that he paid the wrong party and he should pay our family who are the real owners of the land but he has refused," he said.

He added that Mr. Olukoya is saddened that he may have to pay more for the land. According to Chief Timson, the landowners gave a figure to the church. After receipt of the sum demanded, the General Overseer is not happy with us winning as he is going set up a committee to look into the case, but the committee came up with a much lower sum.

"From the information I got, he wanted to pay the money twice. But now, he is saying he is not paying us any money. I want to get people to talk to him so as to avoid unnecessary rancor like what is happening now. We cannot fight a battle for 13 years and still be begging for our right after winning. The court has declared us winner and the order of the court must be obeyed no matter who you are and what you do for a living," he said.

My Driver Ran Mad After Eating My Wife’s Food – Pastor

Pastor Gideon Johnson of No 4, Boripe St., Basorun-Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday accused his wife of poisoning his driver who then allegedly ran mad after eating a meal she prepared for him to eat.

Gideon said this at a Grade C Customary Court sitting at Agodi-Ibadan, where he had gone to seek the dissolution of his 17-year-old marriage to with his wife, Oluwatoyin.

He accused his wife who had four children for him of bad character and threats to his life and other members of his family.

Gideon in his testimony told the court that he gave the food his wife prepared for him to his driver to eat.

He said, “The innocent driver ran mad few hours after he had eaten the food and was chained before we could take him to his family for solution.

“She intended to run me mad, she is fetish, diabolical and a threat to my life; in fact she killed my senior brother and my father through her fetish ways.

“She almost succeeded in ruining my ministry when she ganged up with my enemies to spoil me before the big personalities that usually come to my church for prayers.”

The pastor also told the court that he had not slept with his wife in the last 11 years because of her bad characters.

Gideon said that he would kill his wife if the court should decline his request to separate them.

However, Olwatoyin Johnson in her defence, objected to the allegations levelled against her and denied ever killing his father and brother- in-law.

The mother of four told the court that her husband abandoned her 11 years ago when he married another woman who had bore three kids for him.

She said, “He neither cared for me nor for the four children of the marriage but was always abusing me whenever he was preaching on the pulpit in the church.

“He accused me of being a witch and possessed spiritual power and I had challenged him to do deliverance for me since he is a pastor.”

She, however, pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage for the sake of the children.

The court’s president, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage and ordered two children to be with the plaintiff while the custody of the remaining two children should be with their mother.

Balogun also ordered the plaintiff to be paying N8,000 monthly as maintenance allowance for the two children that are in the custody of their mother.

He also directed the plaintiff to pay N12,000 as house rent and N5,000 as transport fees for the defendant to pack her load from the plaintiff’s house.

The president warned the parties to maintain peace and stay clear of anything that could bring disharmony.

Saraki Saves Buhari’s Proposal From Senate rejection

THE Medium Term and Expenditure Framework (2017-2019) proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari narrowly beat rejection, after Senate President Bukola Saraki persuaded his colleagues to pass the document for committee review, following an extensive debate on Wednesday.
There was stiff bi-partisan opposition to the MTEF and the Fiscal Sustainability Paper, FSP, as most of the Senators from both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party expressed preference for rejection of the fiscal proposal.

They said the proposals were unrealistic. Adeola Solomon (APC-Lagos) said Mr. Buhari’s economic team was in disarray, thereby joining others to ask that the documents be returned to the Executive.

But Mr. Saraki, rounding off the debate which saw the Senate vote to extend its sitting beyond 2 p.m., said the documents only contained assumptions and the Senate had a responsibility to “turn them around” through its committees.

“We won’t take documents from the executive and send it back that way.

“Committees should take the comments of everybody and use it to decide,” said Mr. Saraki, softening ground for the vote that was to follow.

The Senate eventually referred the MTEF/FSP to the committees on finance and appropriations, the stiff opposition to the proposals nonetheless.

From a negative growth rate for three quarters consecutively this year, the government targets an increased 3.02 GDP growth rate in 2017.

“I don’t know how this will happen; it can’t work because nothing is happening,” Stella Oduah (PDP-Anambra) commented.

Mr. Solomon fired negative remarks, stating, “This document we have before us is no document. We should return it to them”

“The Economic Team of the President is in disarray. I say this without being sentimental; I say as a true Nigerian,” added Mr. Solomon, close ally of former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu, believed to be eyeing governorship seat of his Ogun home state cone 2019.

Samuel Anyanwu (PDP) expressed satisfaction that both PDP and APC Senators agreed the proposals were unrealistic; so, the documents should be returned.

Abiodun Olujimi, Mohammed Hassan, Foster Ogola and John Enoh – all PDP Senators – also wanted the proposals rejected.

APC’s Dino Melaye dismissed the documents as “not factual”.

However, Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, supported the transmission of the documents to committees for consideration.

Ahmed Lawan, Gbenga Ashafa, Bukar Ibrahim and Jibrin Barau of APC also asked the Senate to refer the documents to relevant committees.

But before the report of the joint finance and appropriations committees on the documents, the Senate will debate performance of the current 2016 budget, Mr. Saraki said.

Meanwhile, the report of the Danjuma Goje-led appropriations committee on Mr. Buhari’s request for virement of N180 billion from the Special Intervention Funds to critical infrastructural projects was laid before the Senate today.

Army Declares 46 Soldiers Missing - Premium Times

The Nigerian Army has officially declared one officer and 45 soldiers missing in a major Boko Haram attacks five weeks ago, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

Consequently, the Army authorities have formally informed the families of the 46 personnel of the fate of their loved ones and requested that their next of kin forward bank details for onward remittance of accrued payments, military sources told PREMIUM TIMES.

The sources said the declaration and notification were contained in a November 20 notice sent by M. Jimoh, the new commander of the Nigerian Army 145 Task Force Battalion in Damasak, Borno State.

Mr. Jimoh, a lieutenant colonel, sent the signal to the 145 Battalion rear base in Ohafia, Abia State, and copied the Army 7 Division Headquarters in Maiduguri and 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.
Also copied were 5 Battalion in Kano; 20 Battalion in Serti, Taraba State; 103 Battalion in Enugu and 119 Battalion in Malam Fatori, Borno State.

Also in receipt of the signal were 143 Infantry Battalion for special forces in Borno State; 144 Battalion in Asa, Abia State; and 146 Battalion in Calabar.

Each of the battalions copied in the signal had soldiers that were part of the 83 missing, PREMIUM TIMES understands.

Mr. Jimoh recently replaced K. Yusuf, a lieutenant colonel whom PREMIUM TIMES exclusively identified as the commander of the 145 Task Force Battalion who was amongst the missing soldiers.
The admission by the army that 46 personnel are missing came exactly five weeks after the soldiers were dislodged from their base in Gashigar, Borno State, by Boko Haram operatives.

The aftermath of the attack was exclusively reported by PREMIUM TIMES, which included how several soldiers drowned in River Yobe and how at least 83 troops went missing with Mr. Yusuf.

The troops were on deployment in Gashigar, which sits on the northernmost edge of Borno State, as part of the ‘Operation Gama Aiki’ aimed at displacing insurgents hibernating around the Nigerian border with Niger and Chad.

The operation was launched in June 2016.
They were manning the Forward Operation Base there when Boko Haram operatives pushed towards them with superior firepower in the evening of October 16, senior military sources familiar with the encounter told PREMIUM TIMES at the time.

After initial resistance, the troops soon abandoned their base and scampered for safety. At dawn on October 17, the leadership of the Nigerian Army was informed that Boko Haram attacked the troops when they jumped into River Yobe, where the sect opened fire and left unknown number of them fatally wounded.
Twenty-two of the fleeing soldiers were rescued by the Nigerien troops and transported to a hospital in Diffa, southern Niger, for treatment, the Army also learnt at the time.

Yet, for several days, the spokesman for the Army, Sani Usman, maintained that the report was false.
But on the same day that he spoke, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole in the northeast, Lucky Irabor, a major-general, claimed only 39 soldiers went missing.

The Army also opened a secret inquiry into the attackafter some brigade commanders raised questions about the conduct of the soldiers.
For instance, the commanders said it was difficult to explain how utility trucks were used to dispossess soldiers of their armoured vehicles especially when the soldiers said they were alerted in their various positions.

Senior military officials also found it curious that some of the soldiers were rescued by their Nigerien counterparts with their bullets still largely unspent.

“If they actually came under attack while they were fully at alert, then they should have exhausted their ammunition before taking to their heels,” the source said. “At least that much should be clear."

$15M: Patience Jonathan Loses In court

JUSTICE Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court Lagos, on Tuesday refused to restrain a fellow judge from taking steps in relation to the frozen $15.5 million allegedly belonging to Patience Jonathan.
Mr. Idris declined an application by counsel to the former first lady, Ifedayo Adedipe, who sought an order to restrain Justice Babs Kuewumi from taking further steps on the frozen sum.

Mr. Adedipe had urged the court to stop Justice Kuewumi from making any forfeiture orders, in respect of the said sum, which was frozen by the EFCC, until the determination of an interlocutory application on the subject.

It will be recalled that Mrs. Jonathan had instituted a fundamental rights suit against the EFCC, claiming the sum of $200 million as damages for inconveniences suffered.

In her suit, she had joined the EFCC, Skye Bank plc, and a former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Warampo Dudafa, as respondents.

Also joined in the suit are four companies: Pluto Property Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Transocean company Ltd and Globus Integrated Service Ltd.

Mr. Dudafa was charged alongside the four companies before Justice Kuewumi, on 15 counts of money laundering.

Representatives of the four companies, which the EFCC said were used by Mr. Dudafa to launder the said money, had all pleaded guilty to the offences.

The said $15.5 million is the same sum which the former first lady claims belongs to her as sole signatory to the accounts of the companies.

When the case was called on Tuesday, Justice Idris acknowledged a letter from counsel representing Skye Bank, Lanre Ogunlesi, stating that he was indisposed and could not attend the court.

The judge added that since Mr. Ogunlesi has requested for a new date to enable him appear in court, the hearing of the application on notice could not proceed.

Meanwhile, before the court could adjourned the case, Mr. Adedipe had urged the judge to direct the EFCC not to tamper with the subject matter of the case pending the hearing of the interlocutory application.

In response, counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to dismiss the application on the grounds that the accounts which housed the money had been frozen.

He urged the court to dismiss the application with a “wave of hand”; adding that there was already an order of court convicting four defendants for warehousing proceeds of crime.

In a short ruling, Justice Idris held that he could not go into the merits or demerits of the interlocutory application, until it is moved.

He ordered accelerated hearing of the case and said that he could not make any order that will be prejudicial to the outcome of the main suit.

He consequently adjourned the case to December 7 for hearing of the main application.

In her suit, Mrs. Jonathan is urging the court to issue an order discharging the freezing order, and restraining the EFCC and its agent from further placing a freezing order on the said accounts.

NNPC May Reduce The Price Of Fuel Soon

NNPC May Adjust Petrol Pump Price on Falling Cargo Rates

*$120m worth of gas flared daily in Nigeria, says OPTS

Chineme Okafor in Abuja

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) may undertake a downward review of the pump price of petrol in its retail outlets across the country, THISDAY has learnt.

The paper yesterday gathered from an authoritative source within the corporation in Abuja that this was possible from a reported consistent drop in the historical price of petroleum cargoes from about $600 per metric tonne to an average of $440 per metric tonne.

NNPC had recently adjusted the pump price of petrol at its outlets, thus raising fears of a possible hike. The development also followed claims in August by its former Group Managing Directors that the government’s pricing modulation framework was not economical for the downstream petroleum business.

The source however stated that the cargo price is one of the key elements often considered by the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) in its calculation of the template for petrol pump price.

This, he noted, has been on the downward trend and could necessitate the corporation reviewing its pump price to reflect the market realities. The other key element being the foreign exchange has been left floating by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He also explained that the corporation has spent a lot of energies securing its petrol supplies and distribution networks to keep the country from what he described as system sabotage during the yuletide season by some marketers.

“One of the things we wanted to achieve is to ensure that we do not have queues in this time of the year and a lot of the energies have been spent on securing that. If you look at the market trend at the moment, we have been fortunate.

Historically, it is this time of the year that cargo prices are about $500 to $600 per metric tonne, and this is one of the two key elements on the PPPRA templates that nobody controls – it is down to market forces,” he said.

According to him, “The cargo price is usually between $500 and $600 per metric tonne, but this year, we have even had cargoes for $440.

The pricing has been good. Our network is a mix of the NNPC and others, because of the open market forex policy, the cost of doing business for others is higher. What NNPC retail has done is to adjust the price to accommodate the additional expense of doing business around this time of the year.

“The N145 per litre is not just the margin but includes freights and all sorts of other expenses; we did that to accommodate the expenses and as we get cheaper and cheaper cargoes, we will adjust our prices in accordance.”

Meanwhile, the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has said about 50 million standard feet per day (mscuf/d) of gas which translates to $120 million revenue potential and 150 to 200 megawatts (MW) of power is being flared at oil fields in Nigeria.

A representative of the OPTS at the recent consultative session for the draft National Gas Policy, Mr. James Ajaifi disclosed this during a panel discussion on the policy. OPTS is the sectoral group for local and foreign-owned companies registered in Nigeria and holding an oil prospecting or oil mining licence.

The group said the government would have to address the issues of gas flaring in the policy document to enable the country maximise its gas resources for development.

Ghanaian Woman Sets Nigerian Husband, In-law Ablaze

          Comfort Agboloshie

Nigerian husband set ablaze by Ghanaian wife, Benjamin Oyem

A Nigerian man living in Ghana, Benjamin Oyem, has died from injuries sustained when his brother’s Ghanaian wife, Comfort Agboloshie, set the room they were sleeping in on fire.

According to reports, 38-year-old Agboloshie on Thursday removed her three children, all females, aged four, seven and nine, from the room in which they were sleeping with their father and uncle.

After taking the children to a safe place, she soaked some clothing in kerosene, set them on fire, before throwing them into a room where her husband, Lawrence Nkem, 45, and Oyem, 42, were sleeping and locked the door.

The brothers were, however, rescued by neighbours who rushed them to the Tema General Hospital with severe degrees of burns.

Nkem survived and is being treated for severe injuries at the hospital but Oyem died.

The Public Relations Officer of the Tema Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ms. Juliana Obeng, said the remains of the deceased has been deposited at the Tema General Hospital mortuary.
